V.A. - O Fino Da Bossa (1964) [Reissue 1994]

This historic album recorded live an important moment in Brazil, not only in music. Two months after the military coup that instituted the dictatorship in 1964, it was realized at São Paulo's Teatro Paramount. It greatly propelled bossa's penetration in Brazil's larger city and biggest consumer market; opened the gates for Elis Regina's highly successful regular TV show under the same name; was the first time when a bossa show gathered 2,000 people; was the first professionally managed show in that movement, with all artists receiving their cachets for their presentations; and was responsible for instituting São Paulo as an important focal point for bossa, until then restricted to Rio.
Memorable performances marked that night, and the life of its participants, most of them beginning their careers. Alaíde Costa performed with a nine-piece band. The Zimbo Trio delivered their extraordinary samba swing through a rendition of "Girl of Ipanema" in nothing reminiscent of the doleful interpretation generally associated with bossa nova. Virtuoso violonista Rosinha de Valença also attacked a hard-swinging samba arrangement for Baden Powell's "Consolação." Another high point of the special night was Oscar Castro-Neves' rendition of Baden's "Berimbau," both at the piano and violão, joined by orchestra. Other famous singers and instrumentalists completed the picture in a night full of enthusiastic standing ovations: Paulinho Nogueira, Jorge Ben (since some years known as Jorge Benjor, as his rights were being paid to George Benson), a then extremely shy and insecure Nara Leão, Ana Lúcia, and Wanda, and other great artists who aren't mentioned here for not having been recorded in this album. The atmosphere was tense, and the show was a message from the artists and university students to the Army, meaning that they rejected the coup and were united. The lyrics of both Maria Moita (Carlos Lyra/Vinícius de Moraes, performed by Nara Leão) and Berimbau (Baden Powell/Vinícius de Moraes) imply a strong political resistance urge. Definitively, a must-have album.
