Tony Carey: CD Collection (1982 - 2009) Re-up

Anthony Lawrence Carey (born October 16, 1953, Watsonville, California) is an American-born, European-based musician, composer, producer, and singer/songwriter. One of his earliest musical experiences was in a band called Blessings, in which he played until 1975 when Ritchie Blackmore hired him as keyboardist for Rainbow. He played with Rainbow on two world tours, until 1977. After his departure from Rainbow, he began a solo career, releasing albums under his own name as well under the pseudonym Planet P Project, and producing for and performing with other artists.

In 1982, an artist named Tony Carey emerged onto the music scene at least to the people unaware of the fact he was the keyboardist on a couple of Rainbow albums. The first song released "I Won't Be Home Tonight" released and caught our attention, then if my greying memory serves me right, followed up by "West Coast Summer Nights". If there is one cd that is a true must have for any true music lover its this one. It has stood the hands of time in my collection and always will. Its not a disc that you'd occasionaly play, its the kind of disc you want to play. I've had album version of this, with the spaceship cover and when I finally got a computer and discovered Amazon and Tony Careys disc, it took me no time to place my credit card number on the screen and have my cd copy. This cd deserves a 10, but I've rated the highest possible.

Former Rainbow keyboardist and Planet P vocalist Tony Carey became a solo star in Germany. The California native had some U.S. success in 1984 with Some Tough City. It yielded two Top 40 hits in "A Fine Fine Day" and "The First Day of Summer." Carey plays virtually every note except for drums, the guitar solos, and a couple of saxophone breaks. His keyboard work in particular is tasteful, efficient, and melodic. Some Tough City is a strong effort. It's a loose concept album and the songs are individual stories about the struggle of down-and-out people trying – and often failing – to make better lives for themselves in big cities like New York and Los Angeles. "A Fine Fine Day" is a majestic rocker with a powerful chorus; the lyrics about mysterious Uncle Sonny's troubles are cleverly vague. "A Lonely Life" seems to profile a drug dealer and junkie, although a pimp and prostitute are possibilities. "Eddie Goes Underground" is an infectious rocker with disturbing lyrics about a statutory rapist on the run from the law. "The First Day of Summer" is deceptive in its bright sound because the song is about two runaway delinquents; the narrator is left behind to work as a hotel dish washer when his friend steals their car and leaves. The high-energy song "Tinseltown" tells how Hollywood eats up dreamers who want to be stars. "I Can Stop the World" is a ballad, but it's not wimpy. "Some Tough City" addresses poverty in the United States. The more traditional ballad "She Can Bring Me Love" is a Springsteen-esque tale of a young working-class couple relying on their love to get through hard times.

Former Blackmore keyboardist/singer Tony Carey takes a more direct, pop-oriented approach on his follow-up to the successful 1984 release SOME TOUGH CITY. Loaded with heartrending rock ballads, BLUE HIGHWAY shows a more vulnerable, yet still highly creative Carey. The album almost sounds like the blueprint that will later lead Boston’s favorite sons Aerosmith to worldwide success. At times, Carey’s voice even bears resemblance to Steve Tyler’s bluesy cackle. Contributing to the über-sensitive sound, BLUE HIGHWAY is produced by Peter Hauke (White Lion, Nektar) and mastered by Greg Fulginiti (Aerosmith, Oingo Boingo, Whitesnake).

edtime Story, the soundtrack to the German film "Der Joker" makes all other possible soundtracks seem like a joke to us Tony Carey fans. Hitting hard with Burning Bridges, this cd is very good offering up good rocking tunes, mixed with the great ballad writing of Mr. Carey. Favorites on this cd include, Burning Bridges, Bedtime Story, Somewhere Down the Road and The Joker. An import from Germany, it has been digitally remastered, and brings out every note of music and Tony Carey's voice and songs telling us great stories as we know him to do. Very good cd and I fully recommend its purchase

This cd is a lot like the boystown tapes..ballad type things…whereas bedtime story is a more hard rockin. 4.25 stars on a 5 scale. The title track is the best song on cd and is superb. Heard it on the radio, shadowland, and If I were king stand out after a few plays. The whole cd is good. Faetures Eric burdon and anne haigis in a duet with carey on no man's land.
