In as much as Alessandro Scarlatti's music is known at all, it is the large-scale operas and the chamber cantatas that have justifiably attracted the most attention. That the leading composer for the Neapolitan stage should also have turned his hand to madrigal composition, by then a distinctly outmoded and declining genre, is easily overlooked, yet a handful of such pieces have survived in manuscripts and, as this record persuasively argues, they certainly deserve a hearing. Perhaps even more surprising than their existence and survival is their style; Scarlatti eschews the possibilities of the basso continuo and opts instead for a language which at times echoes the techniques of the great age of madrigal-writing of some 100 years earlier, and above all the music of Monteverdi and Gesualdo. Indeed, the chromatic openings of O morte and Intenerite voi, lacrime mie are both pure Gesualdo (as are the fugato episodes which follow), and it may well have been that Scarlatti was consciously recalling the style of the earlier Neapolitan master. By contrast, the Lotti madrigals are much closer to the emergent classical language of the early eighteenth century.
With their extensive experience of early baroque repertories The Consort bring to these pieces not only a clear historical perspective but also an imaginative and dramatically alive interpretative approach which pays handsome dividends. Textual details are fully explored, and yet the sense of the whole is never lost. At the purely technical level the high degree of professionalism which has come to be associated with the Consort is fully in evidence; all is finely tuned, delicately balanced and perfectly controlled. In the end it is the broad expressive range of the singing which impresses, from the crisp and vigorous opening of Inganni dell'umanita (distinct resonances of Monteverdi's genere concitato here), to the apparently seamless intensity of La vita caduca, the high point of the record. While the determination to extract every nuance from the music sometimes leads in the direction of mannerism, the overall impression is of a sequence of perfectly-honed and convincing performances.
