The Way We Live wasn't a terribly commercial or compelling name for a rock band, and Tractor is a yet more awkward and less appealing moniker. Yet, for some reason, that's what the Way We Live changed their name to between the 1971 A Candle for Judith album (which turned out to be the only the Way We Live LP) and their 1972 follow-up, Tractor. Both albums are combined onto one CD on this 1994 reissue by See For Miles. A Candle for Judith was uneven, second-division, early-'70s British hippie rock, divided between lumpy, bluesy hard rock and far folkier, pastoral, acoustic-flavored musings. The folk-rockier stuff is better than the harder-rocking stuff, with "Squares" strongly recalling the folkiest, most acoustic outings of the early Pink Floyd. A little raga-folk comes into play on the instrumentals "Madrigal" and "Siderial," and the brief "Angle" is of a piece with the moody British folk of late-'60s songwriters like Roy Harper and Michael Chapman. But the mood really does degenerate, and the music become repetitive, when the group rocks out and stretches out, though the nearly-nine-minute "The Way Ahead" makes some rapprochement between their hard and soft sides. On Tractor, the name changed, but the sound basically remained the same. As the name Tractor itself portends, the record was heavy on pile-driving, lumbering early-'70s British blues/progressive rock with an anti-straight-world lyrical mindset. This time around, the tracks tend toward the longer and heavier, and are still handicapped by a lack of arresting riffs, though that doesn't stop the band from leaning on them insistently. Built around a repetitive, anxious lick, "All Ends Up" puts forth their most menacing face, and "Ravenscroft's 13 Bar Boogie" (Ravenscroft being John Peel's original surname) finds them succumbing – deliberately, tongue-in-cheek? – to the era's worst blues-rock cliches. The more attractive, though not upper-tier, British acoustic folk-rock element is lighter this time around, but still present on "The Watcher" and "Everytime It Happens." The closing ten-minute epic "Make the Journey," however, reinforces the impression of a band whose actual musical ideas aren't up to fulfilling their artistic ideals.
