    Modern Electric Blues, Blues-Rock | Label: Rounder/Varrick | # CD-VR-036 | 00:58:12

Recorded Live At The Carter Barron Amphitheater, Washington DC. With Special Guests Bob Margolin, Pinetop Perkins, Luther "Guitar Jr." Johnson, John Hammond and Toru Oki. This album is dedicated to the immortal spirit of Muddy Waters.

The concert was billed as "Farewell for Now." After, as Clive Gray pointed out in his notes to Live in Europe (VR-033), .. More than 3000 gigs in fifteen years with almost no change in personnel…", the time had come for the Night-hawks to pause, to reflect, to look back, look at the present and the future. This new album and Live in Europe represent the final chapters of those first fifteen years. Whereas Live in Europe presented the band's four-piece incarnation (1974-84: excluding the earliest members and Greg Wetzel [1984-86], now keyboard player with T. Graham Brown), this new album focuses on the band's role as a backup unit that has worked with many of the true legends of American music.

Musically or personally, it will be hard for anything to equal the thrill of the band's relationship with Muddy Waters. I first heard Muddy on my transistor. I was just 14 and will never forget that giant voice coming out of that little box singing "The Same Thing.''Seeing him perform in the later '60s, it was still hard to imagine meeting him, much less becoming friends. But the band got to play weeks at a time opening shows for the great man. We had the opportunity to sit in, sometimes even substitute for his sidemen, to visit him at home outside Chicago, and were expected to call on his birthday. And the musicians from his band of that era, including Bob Margolin, Luther "Guitar Jr.”Johnson and Pinetop Perkins, became close friends as we graduated from being their students to their partners in many projects, including the Jacks and Kings albums and this present offering.

Along with Muddy and his band, John Hammond has been one of our greatest teachers, supporters and counselors, as well as friend. And our relationship with Toru Oki took the ‘Hawks overseas to Japan and brought Toru to the American source points of his dreams, joining us on shows like the Mississippi Blues Festival where he leveled the crowd two years in a row.

Times change and life moves on. Jim Thackery has chosen to pursue his career with a new group, the Assassins, whereas Pete, Jan and I have chosen to continue with the Nighthawks. Joining us in 1988 are two musicians with impeccable credentials. Our old pal Jimmy Nalls joins us on guitar after stints with Sea Level, Dr. John and the legendary D.C. Dog. And Master Blaster Jimmy Hall joins on vocals, sax and harp (yes, we do double it up on harps). A longtime friend and associate, Jimmy has cut several solo LPs and sung for the likes of Dickie Betts and Jeff Beck, as well as rocking for a decade as the frontman for Wet Willie. Subtract one Jimmy, add two. The first few months of this new Nighthawks have excited us tremendously. We have already had opportunities to work again with Luther, Pinetop and Bob, and have been talking about a return to Japan with Toru this fall. And you can bet that we'll be hooking up with John soon, too.

So, although this album is the final chapter of the early Nighthawks, we see it as the opening of a whole new story, the next 3000 gigs in the next fifteen years as the Nighthawks explore American music and carry it to the world.
