Garage Psychedelic Rock

One could easily make the case for designating the Masters Apprentices as the best Australian rock band of the '60s. Featuring singer Jim Keays and songwriter/rhythm guitarist Mick Bower, the band's earliest recordings combined the gritty R&B/rock of Brits like the Pretty Things with the minor-key melodies of the Yardbirds. The compelling "Wars or Hands of Time" and the dreamy psychedelia of "Living in a Child's Dream" were undiscovered classics, although the latter was a Top Ten hit in Australia. Bower left the group after suffering a nervous breakdown in late 1967, and the Masters grew steadily less interesting, moving from flower pop and hard rock to progressive and acoustic sounds. Plagued by instability (undergoing eight personnel changes between 1966 and 1968), the group moved to England in the early '70s, achieving some cult success with progressive rock albums before breaking up in 1972.

Garage Psychedelic Rock

The Masters Apprentices had changed a lot in both personnel and style by the time they issued their second LP, two and a half years after their first. It's a respectable but oddly schizophrenic effort, finding them searching for an identity with competent forays into hard rock, early progressive rock, and poppy folk-rock, with orchestral instrumental links between many of the tracks adding to the confusion (as there's no concept driving the LP). "A Dog, a Siren and Memories" ranks as the most accurate Simon & Garfunkel imitation ever.

Garage Psychedelic Rock

The Master's Apprentices, along with Billy Thorpe and the Aztecs, were the two biggest Australian bands of the late 60s/early 70s. I cottoned onto the Masters slightly retrospectively, in 1980 I think. Hence my review of this compilation. The Masters dabbled in various styles - their earliest stuff reflected the O/S (overseas) trends of youthful psychedelia and, at times, some seriously twee sixties pop. This compilation covers their work from 69 to 72 when they absorbed the emerging genres of hard rock and heavy metal. Yes, this album has an innocence and naivity, even evincing at moments the ghost of the 1950s. Nevertheless, it's all good. "Turn Up Your Radio" is truly exhilarating and was THE all-time favourite dance track in our loony hippie fringe scene on the cusp of the 70s/80s. "Death Of A king" and "Future Of Our Nation" are good songs which showcase a heavy metal sound that's still kind of mellow - both songs have a similar message: revolution is in the air, but is it really going to improve things? The last track, "Thyme To Rhyme" deserves special mention: a single acoustic guitar backed by delightful mysterious whistling, sailing sound effects which gradually rise in the mix.. a wistful, truly unique song, quite beautiful.

A couple of the Master's best songs are missing from this disc, including the early power pop ballad, "Wars Or Hands Of Time", my favourite Master's track. But on the whole I think I would recommend this album.

That later prog rock and "Wars or Hands of Time" type stuff is all good and nice but if you want to hear what The Master's Apprentices were really all about, what made them so great, this is the album you need to hear. Recorded all in one night in a garage in April of 1966, this powerhouse set of lo-fi rock & roll standards shows that these guys were truly masters before they even really got going. Mick Bowers is on fire on the guitar and the rhythm guitar of Rick Morrison chugs along like there is no tomorrow. Technical limitations have rendered Jim Keays' vocals a little murky but it does little to dampen the mood. 21 tracks is a hell of a set to go through without losing an ounce of steam. You've probably heard these songs a million times but you haven't heard them done by the Masters in the true spirit of garage rock.

This is the story of how the Masters propelled themselves from the garage to national stardom. Voted Australia's most popular band, the Masters went on to record in London's famed Abbey Road studios alongside John Lennon before their eventual split in 1972. 'Fully Qualified' takes you on an amazing journey from suburban Adelaide in the early 1960's to the world of puffy shirts, leather, long hair, drugs, groupies and manager exploitation. Theirs was a life of screaming fans, furious days and even wilder nights. It was all fame and no fortune back then, and the band eventually came to an end in London, penniless after years at the top. However, the Masters Apprentices had unwittingly blazed a trail for all those who would follow, and had lived by their anthem 'Do what you want to do, be what you want to be' the Masters Apprentices, Australian rock 'n' roll royalty.
