Depending on the tracks, for fans of New Order, or for fans of the Pale Fountains, Microdisney, Prefab Sprout and Aztec Camera. "A document of mid-eighties Britain from it's pokiest cul-de-sac."
If you were born in the mid 60s in Britain and you weren't in a band as a teenager then you got it WRONG. What have you got to look back on? A few mangy photos? We that tuned our trannies to Peel and picked up guitars have OUR late teens soundtracked forever. We watched T-Rex on 'Top of the Pops', got intoxicated by punk and inspired by DIY techniques. We were radicalised by the Tory Government's class war. Pop music was a cultural signifier in the late 70s and early 80s, it was our way to escape the squares.

And it was egalitarian. The Prog-rockers had largely been taken from the middle classes, but the punks and DIY-ers were generally state-school educated. Nowadays the posh are back making meaningless pap again in all disciplines of art, it's the kids from the Music Schools being largely responsible for 21st Century British pop.
Plus, back in our day it was largely suburban. The further away from the big cities, the more unusual the music was. The cities had art-projects, venues and studios, and were run by Socialist councils keen to help the disenchanted working class. We didn't have that in the Tory-dominated south.
The Bridge fit this suburban/working class profile perfectly. They were from poor families in an upper class district near Heathrow Airport which, therefore, had no cultural facilities or any tradition of non-conformity. The members were all the 'awkward' kids at school who found solace in 'difficult' music. Anything that upset the straights.
The Bridge not only soundtracked their OWN lives by existing in the early-mid 80s, but, retrospectively, offer US ALL a soundtrack of the musical landscape at the time. The early stuff comes out the fag-end of experimental Northern-English gloom, enamoured as it is with New Order and the introspection of the Cherry Red 'Pillows & Prayers' compilation.

The 'mid period' Bridge then walks in the shadows of the bookish, leftist, articulate 'big pop' of Aztec Camera, Prefab Sprout, The Smiths and Microdisney; then, as British independent music starts to take an amateurish turn around 1985 and the hipsters ease up on the 'year zero' orthodoxy of punk, The Bridge's 'late period' looks back to the late 60s and aims high by referencing The Beatles and Van Morrison.

Little Richard once said that "all great rock 'n' roll is a bit wrong". The early 80s British underground scene created some unique and timeless music because those involved were, in the main, unaware of musical theory and turned their backs on traditional forms. The Bridge were more than "a bit wrong" because during their time together they were constantly shooting for the moon. At a time where it was desperately unfashionable to admit to wanting to be big, The Bridge wanted to be MASSIVE. The band was all-encompassing. All were on the dole at a time in their lives where they could've been joining the yuppie generation. Rehearsals, demoing, writing were non-stop; as they looked for THE song, THE sound that would propel them out of their bed-sits. There was no support from anyone, they did it all themselves, including all the recordings you hear on this CD.

    But..
The Bridge were a total disaster. A catalogue of stupid gigs in irrelevant Surrey pubs, student union bars filled with yobs, 'pay to play' support slots where the entire audience were us, their long-suffering friends. They were even the turn at my 21st, the poor bastards.

However, do not fret, dear and sensitive reader. The story of The Bridge has a happy ending. The seven individuals (plus their manager 'Ears' Frampton) involved in these recordings learned EVERYTHING you need to learn about being in a band, writing and recording pop music AND dealing with the business whilst in The Bridge. They learned it the best way, the hard way, by trial and error. Not from a book, or a lecturer. So, afterwards, all had hugely successful careers in the music industry, signing major record deals, owning record labels, working for Simon Cowell, being the world's leading brand consultant etc.

The joy of listening to The Bridge in 2013 is to study the contradictions with the benefit of hindsight. Perfect, ambitious pop - made by idiots with no money. Beautiful melodies - with lyrics about Thatcher and the bitterness of poverty. Slick musicians who tried their darndest to be the best they could - at the same time as being a bunch of nasty, aggressive street-urchins who would happily berate the punters and threaten to take them outside. One should, therefore, listen to this compilation in the same way one would consume Northern Soul; astonished that the band didn't 'make it', but also studying where they went wrong.

The Bridge had nothing, yet they gave it everything. Can you honestly say you did that when you were in your teens? If you're in your teens now, give it all you've got so you've got something to look back on.
And for God's sake, be a bit WRONG.
