Ted Nugent - Albums Collection: Nugent (1982); Penetrator (1984); Little Miss Dangerous (1986) (3CD) Reissues 2001

While many Ted fans think he fell off the earth after 1981's Intensities In 10 Cities, that is not true. This album contains many songs that would have easily been at home on some of his earlier albums. the cuts Fightin' Words, Tailgunner, We're Gonna Rock, Habitual Offender and Don't Push me all contain the tough guy Ted formula that made him a star in the first place. Tailgunner is equal to Stranglehold and Smokescreen for it's power. Four songs mention guns, classic Nuge. The song Bound And Gagged is a patriotic song about the Iranian hostage crisis. This album boasts Derek St. Holmes at singer, and he sounds good. Teds guitar work is fast and crisp. This album gets a bad rap because it marks a point where Ted for whatever reason tried to change the direction of his career. Many of the albums after this were a joke, but this one is solid. In recent years Ted has released the excellent albums Spirit of Wild and 1979 Live At Hammersmith, but on the whole new Ted albums are becoming more rare than Bigfoot sightings, don't overlook this unfairly maligned album.

The 1982 release of Ted Nugent's second self-titled release ushered in a new era for the Motor City Madman. With his relationship with Epic having run its course, the Nuge signed a deal with Atlantic Records. From the album's black-and-white sleeve to a reunion of sorts with the undervalued, underappreciated Derek St. Holmes, Nugent made it evident that for all intensive purposes, this album was meant to be a "return to basics." Producing the record himself, Nugent surrounded himself with an ace band that included Jeff Beck/Rod Stewart drummer Carmine Appice as well as Pat Travers and longtime Nugent bass player Dave Kiswiney. Kicking off with the classic Nuge rocker "No, No, No" and "Bound and Gagged," Nugent gets off to a strong start. Unfortunately, things quickly deteriorate from there. The tracks that follow tend to run from the mediocre "Fightin' Words" to the just plain awful, like "We're Gonna Rock Tonight." On a positive note, the album's compact production has not only aged well, it has proved to be Nugent's only relevant sounding record of the '80s. For hardcore Nugent fans only.

Ted's guitar licks are as prominent as ever, as evidenced on such standouts as the album-opening "Tied Up in Love." on this album, the follow-up to, Nugent . British singer Brian Howe (Bad Company) replaced Derek St. Holmes on vocals on this album and the sound of the time steps in with a little more keyboard than one would expect from the extreme rocker.

Back in the early 80's when MTV ignored 70's rockers like Ted, he was releasing some great material. For those of you who remember U68 the UHF channel that played hard rock videos during the Power Hour, I saw the video for Tied Up In Love(Coal Miner Ted with chicks). My addiction to Ted Nugent began. This album rocks hard with classic rock tunes and scorching guitar. Classic songs like Thunder Thighs, Draw the Line and Go Down Fighting are Great stuff. Its a shame this album fell between the cracks. If your a Ted fan buy it. If your not a nugent fan and you buy it you will be.

Ted Nugent's sophomore release for Atlantic makes a classic case in point for an artist trying to catch up to the times and being a half-step behind. On Penetrator, the Nuge enlisted two-thirds of Billy Squier's backup band, which at one time included longtime Squier keyboard player Alan St. John and veteran drummer Bobby Chouinard. Nugent also hired future Bad Company frontman Brian Howe to handle vocal duties along with Doors bassist Doug Lubahn. Together, this odd mix of arena rockers would enter New York's Power Station to cut basic tracks for what would emerge to be one of Nugent's most underwhelming releases. The first gaping problem lies with Penetrator's production itself. Arena rocker aficionados take note: the album clearly emulates the production of Billy Squier's '80s albums. The rhythm tracks are virtual blueprints for Squier's Emotions in Motion and Signs of Life, which, ironically, was released the same year as Penetrator. Producer Ashley Howe's dated production not only makes relistening to this record difficult, it also takes away from what could have been a decent set of songs. The Nugent aesthetic of Nugent is dead and buried, albeit replaced by the cotton-candy arena schlock of "Tied Up in Love," "Knockin' at Your Door," and "Thunder Thighs" (all of which had potential, but are instead reduced to an ill-advised keyboard-laden smorgasbord that wouldn't have sounded out of place on a bad Survivor record). Another potential rocker, "Lean Mean R&R Machine," and the melancholic ballad "Take Me Home" also fall short. Curiously, the ensuing tour would see Nugent playing mid-sized theaters with vocalist Brian Howe once again at the helm. In a live setting, these songs (minus the studio mucky muck) would fit neatly into a set that highlighted Nugent's past hits.

Little Miss Dangerous is the ninth studio album by American hard rock guitarist Ted Nugent, released in 1986, the third on Atlantic Records. The single "Little Miss Dangerous" was Ted Nugent's most successful US-single at the time. This is mostly because the track was featured in an episode of the same name of the American television series Miami Vice. The track "Angry Young Man" was also used in an episode of Miami Vice entitled "Definitely Miami", in which Nugent guest-starred as a pimp/drug dealer and was killed in a shoot-out with Sonny Crockett (Don Johnson).

With the release of the Motorcity Madman Ted Nugent new live CD Full Bluntal Nugity, Spitfire has also unleashed his 4 long lost `80s Atlantic albums for the second time on CD as part of the Spitfire Master Series. Nugent/Penetrator/Little Miss Dangerous/If You Can't Lick `Em… Lick `Em have all been given the full bluntal digital remaster overhaul. The original Atlantic CD's sounded horrible. With these new remastered CD's you get the FULL BLUNTAL NUGITY and they have some very dangerous high points now. These CD's hit the bulls eye mark. Sadly these albums when first issued did not go further than reach the Nuge army of fans and get a few new comers due to low promotion from his then label Atlantic. All 4 CD's have been updated with new liner notes on the history of each album buy Nuge & Gary Graff. Do yourself a favor and pick them up. Play these CD's loud and you will rock your brains out. You will be surprised at what you have missed the first time these albums were around.
