Sun 1972 is the lone album by Australian progressive jazz rock group Sun. Produced by Horst Riepold for RCA Victor and released in August 1972. Australian musicologist Ian MacFarlane said the album was "a collectible progressive jazz-rock album". Australian singer Renée Guyer was a member of the group on this recording and later went on to have a solo career.

    Background
Wollongong natives Henry Corley, Gary Nowell, Keith Shadwick, Ian Smith and guitarist Alan Vander Linden formed the blues band King Biscuit, which played on Sydney's university and nightclub circuit from 1968 to 1971. King Biscuit primarily performed cover versions of Muddy Waters, BB King, Howlin' Wolf, Sunnyland Slim and Buddy Guy. They also provided covers of psychedelic rock and soul songs from the late 1960s. King Biscuit changed its name to The Sun following the departure of Vander Linden. After Ian Smith's departure, Renée Geyer served as lead singer for the band's 12-month existence, appearing on their only album, Sun 1972. Sun formed in Sydney in 1971 with George Alamanza on piano, Corey on bass, Geyer (ex-Dry Red) on lead vocals, Nowell on drums, Steve Phillipson on guitar, saxophone, flute, clarinet and shadowic. background vocals. Phillipson was soon replaced by Chris Sonnenberg on guitar. They evolved into a jazz-rock band playing wine bars and other major venues in the early 1970s. Sun's live repertoire combined jazz, psychedelic rock and blues, inspired by John Coltrane, Archie Shepp and Chicago art ensembles. All these styles were played with varying degrees of success, but with much enthusiasm and peer interest. They were one of Australia's first jazz-rock groups, challenging the musical conventions of the time and garnering acclaim from the art world. As a result, they appeared on ABC Television's arts show GTK. In early 1972, the group signed with RCA Records' Australian subsidiary, RCA Victor, and began work on their only commercial recording, their debut album Sun 1972. Includes all original songs by band members (plus one past member). The song was released in August 1972 and produced by jazz entrepreneur Horst Riepold's Australian subsidiary. Australian musicologist Ian MacFarlane said the album was "a collectible progressive jazz-rock album". Sand drummer Gary Nowell said, "It could be said that the recording was rushed (eight hours) and the band members were not representative of the excitement generated by the band's live gigs when they were very young and inexperienced." The more conservative rock community of the time. Anyone with the slightest interest is encouraged to take a look at the GTK recordings available from the ABC archives in Sydney before the archives are dismantled and disposed of as planned by current ABC management. Liepold later moved to New York and founded the Sweet Basil nightclub.

    After the album
Starley Ford joined the band in Geyer's place, exploring the boundaries of free improvisation while also retaining strong blues ties under the influence of Shadwick and Nowell. Ford's vocal range and openness to different styles of music delighted audiences. George Almanza left the band and was replaced by keyboardist, guitarist and songwriter Tony Slavic. Slavic continued to play with other rock bands in Australia. Nowell and Shadwick left the band. Sun continued to work with Corey, Ford, Slavic and drummer Ian McLennan for several years shortly after citing differences in musical direction, but this line-up played a more prog-rock style and toured Australia extensively, but Sun eventually disbanded as an organization after a few more years. One of the founding members, Keith Shadwick, went on to record the album Free Time, which was released by Candid Records shortly before his death in 2008. Proceeds from the album Free Time will be donated to cancer research at Barts Hospital in London. Keith Shadwick's album Free Time was released at London's Ronnie Scott Jazz Club five days after Keith's death. The young lions of the London jazz scene packed the night in a tribute to Shadwick. The 'Free Time' album consists of Shadwick's piano and lead renditions of his own compositions, featuring Robert Lackey and Justin McCoy on bass guitar, as well as incendiary drumming from original partner Gary Nowell. Shadwick's music on this album continues Sun's adventurous tradition of live gigs. Label candidrecords.com.uk has sold out the first pressing of 'Free Time'. Sun bassist Henry Corey has released several successful blues albums. Guitarist Chris Sonnenberg returned to the United States in 1973 to continue his musical career. Pianist George Almanza died a few years ago after an outstanding career in music. Thurlur native Ian Smith and Sydney singer Steve Philipson contributed songs to the album 'Sun'. Singer-songwriter Richard Clapton served as lead vocalist for six weeks in early 1973, followed by singer Starley Ford in the Australian original rock musical Hair, serving as Guyer's permanent replacement. Almanza was replaced by pianist Victor Nicorso, followed by Tony Slavic. Renée Geyer has become a celebrity on the popular music scene.
