Works is a 1983 compilation album by Pink Floyd. The compact disc version was released in 1987 by Capitol.
Pink Floyd fans waited to see how the band would follo up the massive effort known as The Wall. In the meantime, they released a compilation called A Collection Of Great Dance Songs.
In the United States, Pink Floyd music was split between two labels. Everything up to and including Dark Side Of The Moon came out through Capitol/EMI, everything from and including Wish You Were Here came out through Columbia/CBS. The band was having massive success through what was coming out on Columbia, and perhaps their former American label was feeling jealous.
When the band came out with The Final Cut, Capitol Records decided to put together a compilation of their own, without any band involvement. Works is a sampling of the Capitol-era material, and far from what could be called a greatest hits package, especially with the odd choice of "Several Species Of Small Furry Animals Gathered Togehter In A Cave And Grooving With A Pict".
There were a few things that made this release appealing. The first is the inclusion of "Embryo", an Atom Heart Mother-era track that had only been released on a various artists compilation album put out by Harvest Records. The second is the use of the quadraphonic mixes of "Brain Damage" and "Eclipse". Diehard fans immediately detected a difference in the mixes, which lead others to believe they were brand new mixes. They were the quad mixes as used on the vinyl versions. Differences include David Gilmour's vocal track, and the laughter heard in "Brain Damage", which pops up in different spots than the regular stereo mix. The DSOTM-esque intro in "One Of These Days" is also exclusive to this compilation, and the intro (taken from "Speak To Me") are also from the quad mix.
Works was released in other countries and did fairly well. Due to some of the negative reviews The Final Cut received, some fans went out of their way to say Works was a better album, even though the material on it was at least ten years old at the time of release.
