Tupelo, Mississippi's Paul Thorn was a prizefighter and skydiver before becoming a rootsy singer/songwriter. As a boxer Thorn once fought against Roberto Duran, and as a musician he has toured and collaborated with Sting, Paul Carrack, Joe Diffie, Tanya Tucker, Ronnie Milsap, and Carole King, to name a scant few.

Thorn is the son of a Pentecostal preacher; gospel music was in his blood from birth and has remained a lifelong passion. Music wasn't his first choice as a profession, however; boxing was. He fought professionally in the 1980s. After retiring, he embraced music, but continued to pay the rent with a day job – until music entrepreneur and manager Miles Copeland heard him play a show in a Tupelo pizzeria. Copeland signed him to A&M. His debut album, Hammer and Nail, was issued in 1997. Thorn moved to Copeland's Ark 21 for 1999's Ain’t Love Strange.

A formidable guitarist, Thorn decided to showcase his chops and the rock & roll side of his roots music on the celebrated Mission Temple Fire Works Stand in 2002. His took on the weighty subject of love for 2004's Are You with Me?, using a more stripped-down style of production and R&B-based grooves to illustrate his material.

Thorn took a four-year break from recording, though he still gigged – if not incessantly, then abundantly – in the United States and Europe. When he did return, on 2008's A Long Way from Tupelo, he'd melded all of his previous explorations holistically into a resonant Americana with his gritty, expressive, soulful voice atop it all. In 2010 he released the humorously yet poignantly titled Pimps and Preachers on his own Perpetual Obscurity label, and followed it in 2012 with his first all-covers collection, What the Hell Is Goin' On?; the album featured Thorn's versions of tunes by Rick Danko, Allen Toussaint, Donnie Fritts, Lindsey Buckingham, Ray Wylie Hubbard, and others.

Thorn released a strong album of originals, Too Blessed to Be Stressed, in 2014. He returned in 2017 with Don't Let the Devil Ride, a collection of covers of gospel blues songs recorded at legendary soul studios across the South.

In listening to Paul Thorn's fourth album, and the direct follow-up to 2002's iconoclastic wonder Mission Temple Fire Works Stand, one cannot help but think that he's spent some time listening to other people's records as well. Are You With Me is a collection of self-penned songs about love; for, against, happy, sad, grief-stricken and bewildered. Nonetheless, it feels like a singer's record. In the laid-back, R&B-drenched grooves one can imagine Thorn listening to recordings as diverse as Lowell George's Thanks I'll Eat It Here, Frankie Miller's High Life, Willy Deville's Backstreets of Desire, Boz Scaggs' Some Change, and Allen Toussaint's From a Whisper to a Scream. It's not that Thorn's fine album sounds like these discs in the slightest, or that he actually referenced them, it's the feel that's similar. Those familiar with Thorn's rollicking blues-based approach to rhythm and blues will be surprised this time out because the Tupelo, Mississippi native's sound comes right from heart of Southern soul on this outing. The album feels like a suite, examining all the stages of love, from bliss to heartbreak, from acceptance to the willingness to try again. Horns, backing vocalists and funky basslines abound in tracks like "She Won't Cheat on Us," as do the shimmering snare and hand drums prompting languid syncopated guitars and a gritty, emotionally honest vocal on "I Want You to Love on Me." There's the dirty horns and B3 that frame "High," and the light, Caribbean-soul inflected R&B that slips and winds around the singer in "If I Can Get Over Her," and the post-midnight smoky groove where crooner and in-the-pocket six-strings pair on "That's a Lie" that preempts the summery afternoon shimmy of "I Don't Wanna Know." Everywhere the sound of Southern Soul permeates, and Thorn's sweet croon rises above and slips through his words. Thorn is the kind of wordsmith where humor, tragedy and emotional honesty entwine and intermingle – check out the simmering deep soul of "If You Can't Love Me Forever." This album stands in sharp contrast to the barroom rowdiness of his earlier outings; if this record lacks the intensity that Mission Temple Fire Works Stand has, it's because it is supposed to. There is real vulnerability in Thorn's protagonists and the way he sings their truths; they're never wimps, they're merely hopeful or broken men trying to communicate from inside their experiences. Ultimately, Thorn shows once again he's a songwriter to be reckoned with, but this time out he proves in spades that he's a soul singer who can slip down into the murk and mess of human emotions with style and aplomb.

Prior to What the Hell Is Goin' On?, singer, songwriter and guitarist Paul Thorn issued six albums since 1997, all of them packed with (mostly) original material. His sensibility as a writer is informed by the wildly varied life he's lived (see bio). It was questionable, however, as to whether he could bring his qualities to bear on an album of covers. The 12 tunes Thorn's chosen here are rooted in classic forms – barroom blues, roots rock, soul, gospel, country, etc. What's immediately apparent, whether you are familiar with the original tunes on this set or not, is just how Thorn has made them his own. The razor-wire electric funky blues of the title track (which features its author Elvin Bishop on guitar), the raw wail of desire in Free's "Walk in My Shadow," the slightly off-kilter rhythm 'n' soul in Allen Toussaint's "Wrong Number," or the scorching country-funk pried from bluegrass in Wild Bill and Martha Jo Emerson's "Bull Mountain Ridge" (with an excellent guest vocal by Delbert McClinton), all bear Thorn's indelible imprint. There are some excellent curveballs here, too: the set opener is a rumbling, martial read of Lindsey Buckingham's "Don't Let Me Down Again," from the 1973 Buckingham/Nicks LP. Bill Hinds' slide guitar shines, as does Michael Graham's skittering organ. Thorn's voice is much lower and rougher than Buckingham's and unique in its phrasing, but he captures the song's intent and turns it on its head, its meaning no longer ambivalent, but pronounced. Another highlight is Thorn's read of Buddy & Julie Miller's "Shelter Me Lord," as a ferocious, roiling gospel blues with backing chorus vocals by the incomparable McRary Sisters (they are present throughout the set; check them on the closer, a rave-up on Eli "Paperboy" Reed's "Take Me with You"; they almost steal it). While the song always felt like a prayer, Thorn sounds desperate, like a man going down for the last time. The only thing that isn't quite up to snuff here is this version of Ray Wylie Hubbard's anthem "Snake Farm." It doesn't contain the grimy, raw sensuality of the original, but that's a small complaint from What the Hell Is Goin' On? On it, Thorn proves his ability to interpret great songs as well as write them.

Tupelo, Mississippi's Paul Thorn has a knack for synthesis. His father was a Pentecostal preacher, so Thorn grew up with gospel, but he noticed that, in his own words, "white people sang gospel like it was country music, and the black people sang it like it was rhythm & blues," and a mix of the two gospel styles – with some gutbucket blues, old-time rock & roll, a sharp pop sense, and a gift for good old storytelling thrown in – pretty aptly describes Thorn's own brand of inspirational roots rock. Like the professional boxer he once was, he drives his music home with patience, skill, and purpose, putting his own restless energy at the heart of things. This set of originals, which follows 2012's What the Hell Is Goin' On?, an album of covers, finds Thorn at his best, and no song here even comes close to being filler. Thorn writes about his native South and its characters with incisiveness, and that old Saturday night/Sunday morning split between the secular and the sacred has always been his favorite theme, the notion that you can mess up, fall from grace, and then still find some kind of personal redemption is what makes Thorn's blend of gospel country rock and R&B sound so naturally joyous. There are several wonderful tracks here, from the opener, the easy-shuffling "Everything's Gonna Be Alright," to "I Backslide on Friday," a fun and infectious ode to good intentions and procrastination. Thorn has been touring and recording with this same set of musicians for two decades, and the tightness and graceful, funky garage rock versatility of the band shows on the melodic country-pop gem "Don't Let Nobody Rob You of Your Joy" and "Old Stray Dogs & Jesus," a Tom Waits-like swampy blues that morphs into a full-blown country honky tonk tune with easy charm. Thorn was born in the cradle of rock & roll, which is also the cradle for modern gospel, blues, R&B, soul, and so much else that has gone into American pop music. He gets it. He gets how it should all go together, and like a boxer with a keen eye, he hits it solidly here.

Don't Let the Devil Ride collects soulful songs originally cut by black southern gospel groups, and features guests Blind Boys of Alabama, the McCrary Sisters, the Preservation Hall Jazz Horns, and Bonnie Bishop. The album was recorded at three temples of sound: the Sam C. Phillips Recording studio, whose namesake gave another son of Tupelo his start; at FAME Studios in Muscle Shoals, where Thorn worked as a songwriter for legendary producer Rick Hall early in his career; and at Preservation Hall, where horn players from the celebrated jazz venue lent songs a New Orleans vibe. Few of the songs here are well known. Billy Maddox, album co-producer, found most of them while digging through releases from small gospel labels in Mississippi and Alabama. The most familiar track here is no doubt Thorn's relaxed tempo version of the O'Jays "Love Train," a song whose feel-good qualities readily adapt to a gospel setting. The new release marks Thorn's first time recording gospel music, after a dozen albums in roots-rock mode, though his upbringing has previously been reflected in his creation of a body of strikingly original songs. The other songs stretch back much farther, but their themes - of redemption, taking stock of one's life, and resilience in the face of troubles - are universal, making them readily adaptable to the fresh takes here.
