Martin Wind - Gravity (2023)

"Gravity". A term for which dictionaries provide a whole range of translation options. These include Gravity, Attraction, Depth, and Solemnity. They all describe the album title by Martin Wind featuring Peter Weniger and Jonas Burgwinkel perfectly - and on very different levels, explains bassist and bandleader Martin Wind. “Musically, the double bass forms the center of every ensemble. It is its foundation, in which the threads converge rhythmically and harmoniously. Comparable to the sun, which holds our planetary system together with its gravity.” At the same time, “Gravity” also works on a personal level. “There are people and places that you are drawn to. Hamburg for example. For me, the metropolis on the Elbe is my starting point and way station when I'm traveling between the USA and Germany," explains Wind, who has lived in Teaneck/New Jersey since the late 1990s. There is also a very special attraction between the members of the trio.

35 years ago, in December 1987, Peter Weniger and Martin Wind, founding members of the Federal Jazz Orchestra, met for the first time. "Even though we parted ways afterwards, playing with Peter always felt natural and natural to me." Peter Weniger describes the special chemistry between the two as follows: "Music is always a social event where you notice with every single note how well the participants harmonize with each other. It is an expression of a process based on absolute basic trust. When you can trust each other blindly, it feels particularly good to me.”

It was a similar story for Jonas Burgwinkel, on whose initiative the trio came about. The drummer found it particularly appealing that there were no specifications for the sessions in the Berlin Jazz Institute. "Since the recordings fell at the height of the corona pandemic, we had to largely forego concerts and rehearsals in advance. But that quickly turned out to be an advantage. Because Peter and Martin had brought compositions with them that were manageable in terms of complexity, but grooved and swinged enormously. This created a special freshness and energy that perfectly documents our working progress,” remembers Burgwinkel, who gives the recordings a distinctive stamp.
