Born in London of Italian-French parents, Sir John Barbirolli (1899–1970) trained as a cellist and played in theatre and café orchestras before joining the Queen’s Hall Orchestra under Sir Henry Wood in 1916. His conducting career began with the formation of his own orchestra in 1924, and between 1926 and 1933 he was active as an opera conductor at Covent Garden and elsewhere. Orchestral appointments followed: the Scottish Orchestra (1933–36), the New York Philharmonic (1936–42), the Hallé Orchestra (1943–70) and the Houston Symphony (1961–67). Barbirolli guest conducted many of the world’s leading orchestras and was especially admired as an interpreter of the music of Mahler, Sibelius, Elgar, Vaughan Williams, Delius, Puccini and Verdi. He made many outstanding recordings, including the complete Brahms and Sibelius symphonies, as well as operas by Verdi and Puccini and much English repertoire.

The year 1786 was one of Mozart's most fruitful, full of diverse works in his most mature vein. It was crowned with the production of the C major Concerto, K. 503, and the "Prague" Symphony. This concerto is the last of the series in C major, and combines with its companion K. 491 in C minor, which in turn succeeded the A major K. 488, to make a trilogy that has been likened to the three great symphonies of two years later. Whatever the family similarities between the other pieces may be, there is no doubt that the C major Concerto, like the C major Symphony, show Mozart glorying in the complete mastery of means and offering a certain Olympian grandeur that at the same time does not exclude his more tender, eloquent vein.

One of the great mezzo-sopranos of the 20th century, Fiorenza Cossotto made her operatic debut as Sister Matilde in the world premiere of Poulenc's "Dialogues of the Carmelites" in 1957 at La Scala in Milan, and went on to become the leading Italian mezzo-soprano of the 1960s and 1970's. The classic recordings presented here feature Gianandrea Gavazzeni conducting the Ricordi Symphony Orchestra and clearly display Cossotto's command of the Italian operatic repertoire. Vintage recording, newly remastered.

Gianandrea Noseda and the London Symphony Orchestra continue their Shostakovich cycle with a pairing of the iconic Fifth Symphony alongside the composer's First. Few pieces of classical music have been the subject of so much debate and discussion as the Fifth Symphony of Dmitri Shostakovich. Following the 'justified criticism' of his opera Lady Macbeth of Mtsensk the Fifth marked a turning point in his career, after which he balanced an even more precarious position as an artist under Stalin’s brutal regime. Completed by the composer at just 18 years old, Shostakovich’s First Symphony propelled him into the international spotlight. Breathtakingly unpredictable, the piece charts a course through soundscapes of blazing passion, melancholy introspection and caustic humour.

Violins of Hope is an artistic and educational project composed of instruments that were owned by Jewish musicians before and during the Holocaust. Violins in the collection were played in the concentration camps and ghettos, providing a source of comfort for some and a means of survival for others. Above all, the instruments represented strength and optimism for the future during mankind's darkest hour. The project was founded by Amnon and Avshalom Weinstein, Israeli luthiers who collect and refurbish the instruments and bring them to communities around the world. Violinist Niv Ashkenazi was invited to join other musicians performing on instruments from this collection and now holds one of the instruments on a long-term loan.

Yes, there was another Cleopatra! She was married to Tigranes the Great, King of Armenia, and together they created an Armenia that reached from the Caspian Sea to the Mediterranean. The resplendent and regal voice of soprano Isabel Bayrakdarian is perfectly suited to the role of Cleopatra. Bayrakdarian shines in arias from three rarely heard operas about King Tigranes and his queen. Bayrakdarians multi-hued voice relates the passion, drama, and fervor of the love story of Tigranes and Cleopatra. Bayrakdarian sparkles in five arias from Il Tigrane by Baroque master Johann Adolph Hasse, famous in his day as one of the foremost composers of opera.

Bent Sørensens (b. 1958) distinctive music thrives on the intangible, from atmospheres and feelings to memories and dreams. This recording assembles three recent concertos from the GrawemeyerAward-winning composer performed by distinguished Nordic soloists, beginning with a second piano concerto played by its dedicatee and inspiration, Leif Ove Andsnes. Sørensensclarinet concerto for Martin Fröstis inspired by the scents of Spanish poetry, while his trumpet concerto for Tine Thing Helsethfeeds of his constant obsession with the beauty and vulnerability of Venice. Each is highly evocative and filled with Sørensens own etched beauty.

Howard Skempton has established over the last 50 years a reputation as one of the UKs most accomplished and internationally-acclaimed composers, with a style which is based on traditional tonality and lyricism; but he also delights in working with unusual instruments and settings, as is clear from this superb new album including music for hurdy-gurdy, viol, medieval harp, accordion and gamelan alongside normal contemporary Western instruments.

The Metis Piano Duo was born around 2014, from the meeting between the two pianists Loretta Proietti and Alessandra Felice, both coming from a wide experience in chamber music. Their common passion for chamber repertoire and in particular for piano duo, gave birth to a natural exchange and fusion of opinions, creating a particular artistic and musical understanding. The idea of Metis Piano Duo name, must be sought first of all in the common interest in ancient Greek literature. In particular Metis has implicit meaning of “cunning of intelligence”, because Metis, a very mighty goddess in Greek mythology, personified wisdom, reason and intelligence, able to identify the best way for the successful solution to the traps of life.

The programme for Pierre Gallon’s new record enjoys the high patronage of a gentleman who was famous in Parisian musical circles in the first half of the 17th century, a certain Charles Fleury Sieur de Blancrocher (1605-1652). Although he was much admired as a lutenist in his own time, he never took the instrument up professionally. We know relatively little about his life - merely that he became friends with the harpsichordist Johann Jakob Froberger (1616-1667)… and then that he died in rather comical circumstances, falling down his own stairs in the aforesaid Mr Froberger’s presence. Finally, he has left us a single piece, for the lute - L’Offrande (The Offering), which is to be found in two major sources from the period.

Music-lovers interested in Baroque music can gain an insight into the highly particular individual style of French violinist-composer Jean-Jacques-Baptiste Anet (1676-1755), considered to be one of the greatest violinists of his time. The most interesting pieces from the composer’s two extant volumes of violin sonatas are performed by Szabolcs Illés on the Baroque violin, Kinga Gáborjáni on the Baroque cello, and Fanni Edőcs on the harpsichord.

Chamber music is traditionally associated with music for a small group of instruments. However, in the past the Royal Chamber welcomed a wide variety of both vocal and instrumental repertoires, as well as devotional music. In the palaces of the Spanish royal family the rooms of the kings and infants had ample dimensions, which made possible the attendance of a large group of musicians and listeners.
