    The biggest single in M|A|R|R|S' career was the only single in their career, the highly influential "Pump Up The Volume". People had never quite heard of a song full of samples from other songs, even though the collage-style of production was something made famous by Double Dee & Steinski and other DJ's and producers. This disc is the U.S. version on 4th & B'Way/Island with mixes that may be different from the UK disc.
    M|A|R|R|S was a one-off collaboration between members of two UK experimental pop hotshots – A.R. Kane (Rough Trade) and Colourbox (4AD). (The band's name represents the initials of its members.) "Pump Up The Volume" was, at its heart, a tape-collage of various other pioneering dance hits of the era: it liberally sampled likeminded tracks by Stock/Aitken/Waterman and Coldcut, stirring up mild controversy in the process. The track (a substantial success in the US as well) has since come to prominence as a genre-defining movie-soundtrack favorite, most recently in the dark '80s satire "American Psycho."
