This album is a literal encyclopedia, and apprenticeship for the blues guitarist! There is no date listed as to when this was recorded, but Robben shows who he is this night and one can only guess what an illustrious carrer he has awaiting him. He shows the importance of the minor 6th scale, and his Mike Bloomfield influence shows strongly. Jimmy Witherspoon a man who needs no introduction, and is missed sadly today by many, displays his usual, dazzling charm, and stage presence.Review by Frank Gi, Amazon.com
I'm a jazz guitarist, and being from Texas, I also love the blues. Of course, Jimmy Witherspoon is great, but, being a guitarist, I bought this (many years ago) due to Robben Ford. This is the album that really made me dig Robben. It's a live affair, and Robben has his Gibson Super 400 plugged straight into his amp without effects or other fanfare. Just pure, honest stuff that smokes with an amazing tone. Robben was young and hungry when this was recorded, and he was likely stoked about playing with a blues legend (at least, it sounds that way). I'll admit it, I've heard only a handful of albums that Robben has put out in the last twenty years. What I have heard pales, to my ears, with these cuts. These days, there's something almost too perfect about his sessions. So highly perfected that it loses some of the straight urgency of a session like this. Larry Carlton is sort of that way. Highly polished studio albums that are good, but pales to hearing him wail in a live setting. If you dig blues guitar that straddles the line with jazz, you won't be disappointed with this one.Review by Dave Lincoln, Amazon.com
