Hot Chocolate - The Rest Of The Best Of Hot Chocolate (1994)
A collection of Hot Chocolate's smaller chart hits, remixes and the occasional flop, it may not have the quality in depth of the 'Their Greatest Hits' collection but it does make for an interesting listen and provides a pleasant trawl through many of the different eras in the bands long career. Bar the extended, 'Heartache No 9', all of the versions here are seven inch edits. That isn't a bad thing as it does allow the album to flow quite nicely in spite of the mish-mash of production quality and musical styles. For lovers of the early Hot Chocolate sound the under-appreciated, 'Rumours' is a real highlight here and I have always loved the catchy guitar lick on 'You Could've Been A Lady'. The Geoff Stephens written ballad, 'Love Me To Sleep' is also a gem for fans and the groups most notorious flop, 'Blue Night' turns out to be a 'grower' the more you listen to it as well. How the jaunty, 'Mary-Anne' failed to chart I will never know and it remains a surprise that the powerful, driving funk of 'Heaven Is In The Back Seat Of My Cadillac' wasn't a bigger hit. I do feel that towards the end of the bands hit making years the then fashionable synth dominated arrangements were not a good fit with Errol's strained sounding vocal style and, however pleasant on the ear they are, songs like 'I'm Sorry', 'Tears On The Telephone' and 'Chances' all sound a bit 'wet' in comparison to their earlier, grittier hits. This said, this does provide an opportunity for fans to 'run through' some of the lesser played material in their Hot Chocolate collection and isn't a bad listen from start to finish. The tracks do come thick and fast though (there are no 5 second gaps in between) and so there is a rather 'cobbled together' feel about the whole thing. Overall, If you like Hot Chocolate and have the companion 'Their Greatest Hits' album, you won't be disappointed with this.
