It is mentioned in almost all biographies of Johann Sebastian Bach: Bach was part of a large family of musicians and at festive gatherings the musical gifts were used to increase the revelry. We know, for example, an occasional piece by Bach about the departure of a brother, in which the wailing of the family who stayed behind, the dangers of the journey and the sound of the post horn (as a sign of the departure of the stagecoach) are portrayed in a humorous way. Comparable comic pieces from the Bach family have been recorded on this CD by soloists and the ensemble Das kleine Konzert conducted by Hermann Max. The oldest work is the wedding cantata that Johann Christoph Bach (1642-1703; an uncle of Bach's first wife) wrote in 1694 for the wedding of an older brother of Bach, based on excerpts from the Song of Songs, which were expanded with all kinds of commentary. More extravagant is Der Jenaische Wein- und Bierrufer by Johann Nicolaus Bach (1669-1753), a son of the aforementioned Johann Christoph. It is probably a cantata written around 1710 about two students who mock a wine and beer seller. The piece, written for a student music company in Jena, may have caused great hilarity in the past, but the humor has faded since then; in many cases, the annotation must be consulted to understand, or even notice the joke. Some songs by Johann Christian Bach (1735-1782) bear witness to a more restrained humor. The most humorous contributions on this CD, however, come from Wilhelm Friedrich Ernst Bach (1759-1845; a grandson of Bach). The Duetto comico 'Der Dichter und der Komponist' in particular steals the show: it is a ludicrous dialogue about two extremely sensitive artists who get nothing on paper because the shouts of marketers and traveling salesmen keep disturbing their sensitive inspiration. Thus, this is actually the only work in which the humor of yesteryear is still directly understandable and appealing to the contemporary listener. In view of the unusual repertoire, this CD is also worthwhile outside the humorous context, partly due to the well-cared-for performance.
