1982's The Message has a good claim to being the greatest rap album of the old school years. It was the first politically radical rap album of its era exploring the various inequalities of 1980s America. No rap act at that point had channelled the mood and struggles of the streets onto record. Grandmaster Flash & the Furious Five became the first to address the reality of inner city life in New York's boroughs. Tracks such as the renowned "The Message" certified them as one of the most influential groups in hip-hop's history. This Expanded Edition of their classic album now includes additional bonus such as "The Message II", "New York New York", the instrumental of the "Message" plus "The Adventure Of Grandmaster Himself", a cut up of various classic breaks that only appeared 20 years after the original recording. Also included are new extended sleeve notes and brand new photos.

Grandmaster Flash & the Furious Five merged the Afrocentric consciousness expressed by such early rappers as Gil Scott-Heron and the Last Poets with b-boy production to create "The Message," an all-time rap anthem. It was the focal point of this LP, which also included "It's Nasty" and "Scorpio," two other strong cuts that might have been winners on their own. Unfortunately, rather than a starting point, this album proved to be their ultimate peak.

Their belated first album tries to be commercial, to touch a lot of bases with a broad demographic, but it's anything but formulaic. On the contrary, it's an act of self-expression–they do consider Rick James a hero–and thus experimental like albums used to be. The only instant killer is the opener, a borrowed funk showpiece featuring calisthenic bassist Doug Wimbish and three-handed drummer Keith LeBlanc. But in the end every experiment justifies itself, from the one Rahiem wrote for and performs like Stevie Wonder (he can actually sing, thus distinguishing himself from Kurtis Blow, Joseph Bowie, and the entire population of the United Kingdom) to the vocoder number to the idealistic Spinners-cum-Edwin-Starr impression to the one Rahiem wrote for God and performs like a believer.
