Der nostalgische Soul hat Rückenwind. Und auf der Liste, wo schon Sharon Jones und The Daptones, Curtis Harding, Leon Bridges, Charles Bradley, Lee Fields, Eli "Paperboy" Reed und Leute wie James Hunter einander begegnen, gibt es jetzt ein neues unbezähmbares Fohlen: Durand Jones & The Indications. Dieses dem Bayou entlaufene Wunder präsentiert ein kurzes Album, das sich, wie es beim Label Stax ja üblich ist, ganz nach der für Memphis typisch feuchten Atmosphäre anhört. Mit allem Drum und Dran! Gebrochene Herzen, Misere, Wut…

Diese acht Titel des ursprünglich beim Label Ohio Colemine Records erschienenen Albums bringen auch eine beeindruckende Stimme zur Geltung. Ja doch, Durand Jones hat ein richtiges Organ! In seinen Balladen bringt er derartig starke Gemütserregungen zum Ausdruck, dass sogar eine ganze, aus lauter Mr. Freeze bestehende Betriebsbelegschaft dahinschmelzen würde! Mit den Up Tempo Tracks versetzt er uns herrliche Uppercuts. Und das ihm zur Seite stehende Tandem Aaron Frazer/Blake Rhein unterstützt ihn dabei, einen recht analogen, möglichst durchgezogenen Vintage-Sound zu erzeugen, der die Sache nur noch herzmuskelzerquetschender, brutaler und gewaltiger macht. Mit einem Schlagzeug, das Tote wieder auferstehen lässt, einer Orgel, die es in der Kirche nicht mehr aushält und einem stürmisch wogenden Bläsermeer! Zweifellos eine wahre Offenbarung!
