Colin James is a Canadian singer-songwriter, guitarist, and record producer, who plays in the blues, rock, and neo-swing genres. Collection includes 15 studio albums and one compilation.

Colin James has worn many hats during his long and storied career. When Colin first hit the scene a quarter century ago, he became an instant rock guitar hero, mentored by the legendary Stevie Ray Vaughan. Since then, this iconic Canadian has topped the charts as a pop vocalist, recorded an acclaimed blues album and led the swing revival with his Little Big Band, which he both fronted and produced. He has performed for the Queen, sold multi-platinum many times over and continues to sell out shows coast to coast. Along the way, he’s written memorable hit songs and given us distinctive covers of timeless classics with his newest album teasing that the best is still yet to come.

This six-time Juno Award winner has come full circle with his latest album, aptly titled Fifteen. On the verge of 25 years since the release of his debut, this is Colin’s 15th release and it takes this Saskatchewan artist back to his full-blooded rock roots. Produced by his longtime associate Joe Hardy (ZZ Top, Steve Earle), it also returns him to the major label where he got his start. “I’d been on an indie and then EMI unexpectedly stepped up,” explains Colin. “We really wanted this album to rock, but I tried to showcase some pretty tunes and soulful stuff as well.”

Mission accomplished: Fifteen features some of the best rock, blues, gospel and pop songs that Colin has ever written. There are co-writes with Gordie Johnson (Big Sugar, Grady) on the Stones meets Stax opener “Sweets Gone Sour” and the Aerosmith-style rocker “I Need You Bad.” Colin also teamed up with Tom Wilson (Junkhouse, Blackie & the Rodeo Kings) and Thomas “Tawgs” Salter (Lights, Josh Groban) on four high-octane tracks, including the buzzing, bluesy “No Time to Get There” and the driving rocker “Stone Faith,” the album’s first single.

There are also two co-writes with Ron Sexsmith that reveal Colin’s sweeter side. The mellifluous “Finally Wrote a Song for You” is a soulful love ballad, while the tender “Shoulder to Cry On,” which closes the album, is a bittersweet acoustic gem. Both songs show Colin’s ever-deepening vocal strengths.

The range of covers on Fifteen is equally impressive. Colin checks in with Allen Toussaint’s funky “Sneakin’ Sally Through the Alley,” a 1974 hit for Robert Palmer, and the early Fleetwood Mac boogie “Oh Well,” written by Peter Green. He also showcases Irish singer-songwriter Foy Vance’s gorgeous, gospel-tinged “Shed a Little Light,” and delivers a deeply soulful take on John Lennon’s “Jealous Guy,” the second time he’s covered a Lennon song.

“It was the Donny Hathaway version that brought me to that,” Colin says of the latter. “It was intimidating, because Hathaway was such an amazing singer. I had to bring everything I had to that one.” Of the former Beatle, he says “John Lennon is fascinating to me because here’s this guy who’s one of the best lyricists of all time, but he loved the rockabilly of Gene Vincent and all that early be-bop-a-lu-la stuff. There were a lot of different sides to him.”

The same is true with Colin. Having traversed so many genres—from blues and rock to pop and swing and back again—he has sometimes puzzled onlookers with his eclecticism. Does his audience finally know what to expect from a Colin James album? “I think people who have followed me this far know what to expect,” he says. “I embrace all my different sides now. There are things on this album that you could find on one of my earliest sessions or on a Little Big Band record. I love being able to branch out and do different things—that’s what keeps it interesting.”

Working again with Hardy, who produced three of his previous albums, created a comfort zone that allowed Colin to stretch out musically. “He’s a musician’s producer,” says Colin. “It’s you and he against the world when you work with Joe. He’s a super multi-tasker, highly intelligent and not afraid to get his hands dirty. Plus, being such a good technician, he knows how to make things pop out of the speakers like no one else.”

Recorded in Vancouver’s Hipposonic studios, Fifteen features an ace band that included veteran bass player James “Hutch” Hutchinson, from Bonnie Raitt’s band, Nashville heavyweight drummer Greg Morrow, who’s played with everyone from Loretta Lynn to Blake Shelton, and guitarist Craig Northey, of cult rockers the Odds. Colin’s longtime bandmates Eric Webster and Simon Kendall rounded out the session players.

Looking back over Colin’s career, it’s a timeline rich in highlights. His 1988 self-titled debut, featuring his two self-penned hits “Voodoo Thing” and “Five Long Years,” was the fastest-selling album in Canadian history. It won him his first Juno and an opening spot on tour with Keith Richards. His second album, Sudden Stop, featured his hit “Just Came Back,” which reached #3 on the U.S. radio charts and earned him the Juno Award for “Single of the Year.” Colin was next credited with launching the swing revival, thanks to his wildly popular Little Big Band, which has released four successful albums to date. He has performed with the likes of Bonnie Raitt, Lenny Kravitz, Albert King, Mavis Staples, Carlos Santana, Buddy Guy, Mick Fleetwood and The Cheiftains; had his songs recorded by artists such as: Lucinda Williams, Johnny Halliday and Maria Muldaur; and won a staggering 16 Maple Blues Awards. Even after 14 acclaimed albums, Colin remains at the top of his game, always challenging himself musically.

Although much of the attention he has received has been focused on his guitar prowess and songwriting, these days, Colin’s focus is on other things. “Singing has kind of crept up on me,” he admits, “and it’s my favorite thing now.” This may sound surprising, coming from a guy who took home the Juno Award for Male Vocalist of the Year twice, but Colin says it’s all a process. “I’m still becoming a better singer,” he says, “I feel like I’m in the middle of the learning curve and I’m just starting to get it. I saw Solomon Burke in Norway before he died and I thought, ‘this man is a better singer now than he’s ever been.’ I’m inspired by that, by the idea that I could be lucky enough to do this forever and still be learning how to hit a song like I want to.”

In many ways Colin has been Canada’s quiet superstar – going about the business of making consistently excellent music, all the while etching out his own unique and important place in this country’s musical history. With this landmark album, he has hit the mark on all fronts showing why he is one of the most accomplished and well-rounded artists around. The fans already know what a legend Colin James is, but Fifteen might be the album that reminds the rest of the world!

Although it's a little short on originality – at times you could swear Stevie Ray Vaughan showed him exactly what to play – Colin James' eponymous debut is an impressive collection of high-octane blues-rock that, at its best, explodes with the intensity of a keg of dynamite. James' forté is his speedy, accomplished guitar playing, which is breathtaking at times, and that's enough to excuse the occasionally awkward originals and predictable covers that pepper the album.. After all, good guitarists – even ones that borrow heavily from old masters – aren't all that easy to find, and sometimes you have to accept their flaws in order to embrace them.

About Album

This was Colin’s sophomore record with Virgin and his first with his good friend Joe Hardy at the producer’s chair. The album’s big sound with driving blues rock edge was recorded in Vancouver and Memphis, Tennessee at Ardent Studios. Guests included Bobby Whitlock, The Memphis Horns and Bonnie Raitt. Just Came Back became Colin’s my highest charting song on American rock stations with a # 3 position. This disc scored a 3 1/2 star revue in Rolling Stone and led to opening for ZZ Top, and appearacnce on Late Night With David Letterman and several tours overseas. This album won 2 Junos Awards for “Single of the Year” and “Male Vocalist”.

About Album

This album was a large step in a different direction for Colin that preluded the “swing craze” of the late nineties by 5-6 years. LBB includes songs by Roscoe Gordon, Roy Brown, Ike Turner and others. The Roomful Of Blues horn section from Rhode Island joined Colin for a two-week recording session that produced a critically acclaimed album that was ahead of its time. LBB received favourable reviews in Rolling Stone, Billboard Magazine and The New York Times. Colin and his “little big band” also made an appearance on Late Night With Conan O’Brian.

Canadian blues guitarist Colin James turns in a fine set of both original and cover material. Paring back the sound of his previous effort to the basic guitar, bass and drums, James uses horns and keyboards to color and accentuate certain tracks rather than overwhelm. He works his blues magic on such covers as Robert Johnson's "Walkin' Blues" and Jerry Lynn Williams' "Standing on the Edge of Love" while proving his own songwriting capabilities on cuts like "Freedom" and "Better Days." A great return to form.

About Album

Colin’s last recording for Virgin is a “best of” and is mostly a culmination of the radio hits up till then. Three new songs were recorded at Compass Point Studios in the Bahamas. The new songs were Stay, which scored a #1 song on rock radio in Canada, Happy (a Stones style rocker) and a cover of Robert Johnston’s Milkcow Blues.

About Album

Colin and his longtime friend, Colin Linden (they have known each other since thy were 13 and 16 respectively) teamed up to record this predominately acoustic album, recorded mostly live in his Colin’s home studio. It was his first chance to pay homage and delve into everything from straight delta blues to jug band and Chicago blues. There are songs by Sonny Terry and Brownie McGee as well as the great writer and stylist Mose Allison. The album was very well received and won Colin his fifth Juno, this one at roots music and folk festivals across Canada.

While the late '90s may be remembered as the era of the swing revival movement, Colin James was one of the first artists to rediscover this popular musical style of yesteryear. Although James started out first and foremost as a blues guitarist, he'd been a lover of swing since he was a teen, deciding to ditch his blues-rock for 1993's Colin James and the Little Big Band I. The switch proved to be the right move back home; the album was a double-platinum smash. But since the swing revival was a few years off in the early '90s, James returned to blues-rock with 1995's Bad Habits, before this release signaled a return to swing. Included are covers of such legends as Cab Calloway ("C'Mon with the C'Mon"), Ray Charles ("Mary Ann"), and Willie Dixon ("You Know My Love"), plus other highlights ("Jumpin' from 6 to 6," "I'll See It Through," etc.). And fans of James' earlier work will be happy to learn that he hasn't given up blues entirely, especially after hearing the tracks "Let's Shout" and "Tin Pan Alley."

About Album

After making two relatively traditional records in a row, Colin felt the need to write more songs and play more contemporary music. He teamed up with immensely talented singer/songwriter/musician, Craig Northey (The Odds) to write the music of Fuse. Going back to a harder sound and playing with loops was a big change from what he had been doing,and it was exactly what the doctor ordered. A favourite of Colin’s on the album is the Craig Northey song, Something Good.

About Album

Traveler brings us to the present with another mostly original record. Made at the historic Paramour Studios this record was made mostly live with an earthier sound produced by producer/engineer Mark Howard. (Lucinda William’s World Without Tears). Mixed in amongst the original tracks (written with Jeff Trott and Craig Northey) are John Lennon’s I’m Losing You (also the album’s first single), Nick Drake’s Black Eyed Dog, and Jimmy Hendrix’s Rainy Day, Dream Away. Singles to date are Losing You and Make A Mistake.

About Album

Limelight features 14 tracks, a mix of co-written originals and carefully chosen covers that resonate with tasteful playing, soul and groove. It’s a stunning blend of soul, rhythm and roots. Tracks such as Van Morrison’s ‘Into The Mystic’ and Bob Dylan’s ‘Watchin’ The River Flow’ play alongside first single ‘Far Away Like a Radio’, a Colin, Craig Northey, and Tom Wilson co-write.

The album features a cast of supporting players whose work encompasses a who’s who of rock and soul. Drummer Jim Keltner has worked with everyone from Dylan (he played on the original recording of Watching the River Flow) and the Stones, to Eric Clapton and Ry Cooder. Bassist Reggie McBride includes Aretha Franklin, Van Morrison, James Brown and Stevie Wonder in his resume, while Hutch Hutchinson, best-know as Bonnie Raitt’s bassist, has spent time with the Neville Brothers, Elton John, Al Green, and B.B. King.

His fourth release to credit "the Little Big Band," Christmas is a holiday-themed collection of songs from blues/rock singer/songwriter Colin James. Recorded in Nashville, the 2007 album features swing interpretations of familiar seasonal classics "Please Come Home for Christmas," "Let It Snow," and "Blue Christmas," alongside some lesser-known tracks (Louis Prima's "Shake Hands with Santa Claus," Louis Armstrong's "Cool Yule"), and a rendition of traditional African-American spiritual song, "Children, Go Where I Send Thee."

About Album

Colin James has juggled his skills as a singer, guitarist and big-band leader so well over the years that diversity seems almost synonymous with his stellar career. He’s also been a restless voyager, traversing genres—from blues and rock to pop and swing and back again. Throughout it all, Colin has always forged ahead, without regard to fads or trends, going wherever his wandering muse takes him.

On Rooftops and Satellites, Colin’s singing and guitar playing has never been more soulful and his new songs are among his most meaningful ever. It’s not a breakthrough disc or a comeback record, because Colin’s an established rock and blues institution who’s never gone away. But it is an album that serves notice that Colin James just keeps on getting better.

Colin has never shied from exploring all of his musical tastes, and with Rooftops and Satellites, co-produced by Colin and Mike Fraser (AC/DC, Metallica), we hear both a softer side and an edgier rock side. It’s R&B flavoured with touching ballads and blue-eyed soul, and yet the rockier side of the album continues on two well-chosen covers: a blistering garage-rock version of Bob Dylan’s early classic “If You Gotta Go, Go Now” and a driving rendition of the Toots & the Maytals’ soulful “Johnny Coolman.” But Colin delivers his most freewheeling number with the relentlessly chugging, first single, “Man’s Gotta Be a Stone,” a song he calls his “Buddhist boogie.”

About Album

Aptly titled FIFTEEN, after almost 25 years in the business of music, this is the Legendary Canadian guitar vocalist’s 15th release.

From the opening chords of the first track “Sweet’s Gone Sour” to a cover of Fleetwood Mac’s “OH Well”, the album contains some of the best rock, blues, gospel and pop tracks Colin has written and recorded to date!

Co-produced by Joe Hardy (ZZ Top), FIFTEEN combines nine originals penned by Colin and friends including the lead-off track “Stone Faith” and “I’m Diggin” with Tom Wilson and Thomas ‘Tawgs’ Salter (Lights, Midway State), “Finally Wrote A Song For You” with Ron Sexsmith and “Sweets Gone Sour” with Gordie Johnson along with some very cool Colinesque interpretations of “Jealous Guy”, “Sneakin’ Sally” & “Shed A Little Light”.

Blues singer/guitarist Colin is one of several excellent Canadian blues artists, this is his 18th. album release and he has been playing the blues since he was a teenager in the 1980s. And quite frankly it shows, this album sees him saluting his blues heroes, from Freddie King to Howlin' Wolf, from Robert Johnson to British blues guitarist Peter Green, with Colin and the band effortlessly going through a number of styles and sounds paying tribute to these artists but putting their own spin on things rather than doing straight copies. The band is drummer Geoff Hicks, Steve Pelletier on bass, Jesse O’Brien on keyboards and Craig Northey on 2nd. guitar and the album was recorded in just 2 days in Vancouver.

The album begins with a rocking Freddie King instrumental "Boogie Funk" ,with some nice harmonica as well as some blistering lead guitar, then its a nice relaxed take on Peter Green's "Watch Out", before we get a rocked up version of Tommy Johnson's "Big Road Blues" with Colin demonstrating his electric slide guitar playing. We also get to hear Colin's acoustic side playing on Robert Johnson's "Last Fair Deal", while "Ain't Long For Day" has electric slide on a stunning take on the old Blind Willie McTell song. We also get more Freddie King with Don Nix's song "Going Down", jazzy R&B with "Bad Bad Whiskey" and William Bell's beautiful soul ballad "You Don’t Miss You Water" - in short Colin and the band can take on any style and completely master it - even combining Howling' Wolf's "Riding In The Moonlight and Jimmy Reed's "Mr. Luck".

This is a really good record and Colin James should be much better known in Britain (and the States!) he is both an excellent, versatile blues guitarist and also a really good singer - catch him in the UK this November when he's supporting Beth Hart. There isn't an average track on this record never mind a bad track - great work!

Our great neighbor to the north, Canada, never seems to run out of their supply of talented and authentic sounding bluesmen. I give you my latest find, Colin James. I know he has been around a while, I knew the name vaguely, but this is my initial introduction to him. It was well worth the wait. Colin and his band mates imbue this recording of covers by blues icons with a freshness and enthusiasm that is only superseded by their grasp of the blues. In the liner notes he states that this is a collection of tunes by artists that have influenced his taste in blues. Colin’s guitar skills are very evident, as well as having a voice well suited to the blues. His musicians are with him at every turn.

Freddie King’s “Boogie Shuffle” is the kind of song that would be used to kick off a live show. That is appropriate here, as everything was recorded live in the studio. The band injects energy in this number. Fleetwood Mac’s “Watch Out” is killer and you can hear some of Peter Green’s inflections in Colin’s vocal delivery. Tommy Johnson’s “Big Road Blues” is done up ala Canned Heat replete with some way wicked slide guitar. Slide appears again on “Bad Bad Whiskey”. Coleen Rennison provides background vocals here and elsewhere.

A song associated with Freddy King and later The Jeff Beck Group, “Going Down”, stands proudly up against both versions. Muddy Water’s “Gypsy Woman” is taken at a slow and appropriately loose pace. The presentation of “Goin’ Away” takes the listener way down south with down home sounding slide guitar. “Lonesome” shuffles along quite nicely thank you and Colin’s guitar is spot on. Colin doesn’t have as commanding a voice as Jr. Wells nor the swagger and attitude in his voice, but never-the-less he delivers a decent take on Jr.’s “Hoodoo Man Blues”.

Colin melds Howlin’ Wolf and Jimmy Reed in “Riding In The Moonlight/Mr. Luck” as his acoustic guitar battles it out with Steve Marriner’s lively harmonica work. A horn section appears in the R&B tinged “Don’t Miss Your Water”. Mournful slide guitar on Blind Willie McTell’s “Ain’t Long For Day” is akin to a wayward wind beckoning the listener down south. Things get capped off with an enthusiastic reading of Robert Johnson’s “Last Fair Deal”.

Canada just keeps giving the world great blues. Some how the blues strike a chord with many Canadian musicians and they absorb the nuances of it in way that is uncanny. If it’s the water, the weather there or whatever, I just hope that the magic doesn’t stop.

Canadian blues-rock artist Colin James recently reflected that : “Blues is the only genre where you can maintain a young profile at the age of 53.”

And while there’s no doubting the veracity of those words, Colin James finds himself in a handy position of being able to reconnect with the blues. Aside from the legacy of his own 30 year recording career, he found deserved success with his last blues album ‘Blue Highways’.

So it probably didn’t take too much of a leap of faith to cut a second such album called ‘Miles To Go’

And if the new album further casts him in the role of an interpreter of songs, it’s a role well suited to an artist who has shifted his focus down the years from rock-blues to big band swing and national steel-into-acoustic.

Colin James has always been adventurous, flexible and innovative. You could argue his greatest success has come when he’s taken an unexpected move, and so it has proved by reconnecting with the blues.

‘Miles To Go’ is his 19th album and it sets the bar high, for with the exception of two excellent self penned songs, he aims to bring new vitality to an extant familiar catalogue of blues songs.

He does so by playing to his strengths as a vocalist of some substance and a guitarist who phrasing makes an equally significant emotional connection as his voice.

His opening brace of songs draws the listener in on the back of a funky horn-led rendition of Muddy Waters’ ‘One More Mile’, (attributed to James Cotton and revisited gospel style as a book-end). It comes complete with Steve Marriner’s stellar wailing harp and a crisp, big toned guitar solo.

He then slips into a blues-rock revisit of Howlin’ Wolf’s ‘Still A Fool’, adding lashing of big toned guitar over a pulsating rhythm section and just enough grit in the vocal to make a meaningful connection with the song.

The real job at hand isn’t so much to emphasize his playing ability as to bring something new or communicate real empathy with the subject matter.

He does both with some tasty slide on Arthur Crupdup’s ‘Dig Myself A Hole’, over some nuanced doowop bv’s and horns. Tracks like this is might be grist to the mill for a player of James ability, but he does bring a sense of delight with his uplifting solo and ebullient phrasing

There’s also a sense of flow at the core of the album, mirroring the fact he’s undertaking a journey into the blues. For example, he digs deep for some vocal emotion on his own outstanding minor key blues ‘I Will Remain’, which is song that can hold its own with all the older blues covers here.

’40 Light Years’ is equally good, but different, as he demonstrates a lightness of touch on a swampy song that could be Mark Knopfler meets Tony Joe White and JJ Cale, over a lovely shuffle beat and more great harmonica

Blues diehards might question the inclusion of Charles Brown’s ‘Black Night’, if only because it’s an exemplar of piano and vocal blues. James retains some piano and adds a smidgen of organ, but transposes it into a clipped note, warm-toned guitar scenario, without adding much to the vocals.

It’s at this stage of the album that the concept of revising blues favourites wears a bit thin, if only because Blind Willie Johnson’s ‘Soul Of A Man’ has been covered by everybody lately, but James breaks new ground with some delicate percussion, distant harp and a down-home dobro feel, before his slide playing takes centre stage.

He brings little more than dutiful reverence to both ‘See That My Grave Is Kept Clean’ and ‘I Need Your Love So Bad’, which again makes us question why those two covers?

Happily, he redresses the balance with some weighty sonic presence on ‘Tears Came Rollin’ Down’, as a combination of nicely distorted guitar and harp makes way for a swaggering guitar solo gives the song real heft.

‘Miles To Go’ is a project that could hold many pitfalls for an artist of lesser ability than Colin James. His tasteful playing always supports the songs and his band add requisite instrumental support, while his singing is that of a blues related artist with enough experience to bring meaningful interpretations to the material.

Such is the quality of his own songs that it’s a shame he didn’t find room for a couple more, rather than revisiting a the sort of blues covers that all self respective blues fans already have copious versions of. ****
