One of the classic lineups in jazz is the organ trio—a unit that typically consists of Hammond organ, guitar or sax, and drums. The sound associated with this tradition is often marked by a joyously flowing funkiness. But the group on Breaking the Shell is a different kind of organ trio, one that plays minutely-textured free jazz. The excellent release features guitarist Bill Frisell, drummer Andrew Cyrille, and—here's the instrumental gamechanger—Kit Downes on pipe organ. Opener "May 4th" quietly pulls you in with Downes's intriguing melodic fragments, Frisell's lyrical guitar, and Cyrille's brushed drums. The result is diffuse, but nevertheless hangs together, in part because of the effective use of quavering drones. In a way, "May 4th" is simply an interesting sketch, a slice of eerie ambience, but it also offers a glimpse of the inventive timbres and playing to come.

The music fully blossoms on the Downes-penned "El." Frisell's affecting interpretation of the melody is accompanied by Cyrille's free rhythms and the composer's wafting organ. Guest Lucy Railton's cello provides delicate sustained tones and lines that nicely shade the guitar.

A take on the Norwegian traditional "Sjung Hjerte Sjung" has an appealing psych-folk quality. The first section finds Cyrille's swirling drums coupled with low and spooky organ. Frisell unspools the melody, subtly varying his phrasing along the way. This mysterious track recalls the late Hungarian jazz guitarist Gábor Szabó. (Breaking the Shell also includes the Hungarian traditional "Este a Székelyeknél," which features Andean flute-like organ tones.)

A touching Cyrille composition, "Proximity," gets a fine reading here. Expressive, clean-toned guitar floats over brushes-on-snare; low-key organ further fleshes out the spare accompaniment. The performance has the hypnotic beauty of a cloud traveling across a cerulean sky. © Fred Cisterna
