Conan The Barbarian is a massive landmark in film scores. I think before that score, composer Basil Poledouris showed the world how to use choir in an epic way. Fantasy was never the same after that. The 1984 sequel still had Arnold Schwarzenegger starring as Conan The Barbarian (How could you not?). director John Milius was no longer directing though. Instead Richard Fleischer got the job and he needed something big since his 70s heyday. Conan was the perfect opportunity. A big name franchise like that should give plenty of everything. Most importantly (for us soundtrack geeks) was the fact that composer Basil Poledouris was back. That surely meant continuity and more music greatness. Basil had a problem though. How do you improve on one of the greatest ever scores? This review is part of Composer Of The Month.
Sadly the album situation for Conan The Destroyer is a bit grim. There’s only 30 minutes of the original material released by Varese Sarabande in 1992. Luckily Prometheus/Tadlow re-recorded the entire score with Nic Raine at the helm and released it in 2011. The sound quality is of course top notch. What about the score? Well since Poledouris got to continue the saga, he adapted the main theme from Conan The Barbarian for ‘Drum Prelude / Main Title (Original Version)’ which is another superb rendition of one of the best themes ever. ‘Net Fight’ use this as well, but there’s an exciting percussion line, perfect for a fight. 0:50 brings back some memories. Love that theme. So barbaric! By the way, the percussion line reminds me a bit of Jerry Goldsmith’s Klingon theme, but that’s just because I’ve been listening to that recently. The cues are nothing alike. ‘Net Fight’ is fantastic though. Lovely themes from Conan The Barbarian are adapted into new wonderful creations like in ‘Valeria Remembered’ where we get a new adaption of the love theme ‘Wifeing’. Beautiful as always.
‘Shadizar / Dream Quest’ brings back the “Tower Of Set” theme from Barbarian, although in a wonderful bombastic version. Very pleasing! The ‘Dream Quest’ part contains some new material written for the sequel, nothing spectacular though, but very nice. It’s great that they included some source music as well such as ‘Town Source Music’ which is a tavern/bard type of music, very nice and simplistic pattern. One of the new characters is Zula played with excellence by Grace Jones. She had the look, and the act to match. ‘Zula – Bombaata Fight’ starts with a nice percussion pattern and then a simple flute theme plays before the main motif of the cue gets going at 1:20. It’s a superb theme in the tradition of Conan. There’s a romantic part from 1:32, where the theme turns into a part of the love theme before ending in a lovely flute motif from 2:06.
‘Bird – The Princess / Boating In’ contains what I think is a new theme played on flute and a lovely one at that. The ending is magical though with those lovely sound sprinkles that is always associated with magic. ‘Ice Palace’ also contains a new theme played on woodwinds with that nervous violin as the underscore before the strings enter main stage with an upwards motif. The harp motif sounds familiar though. I love how Poledouris has made this into a proper sequel score and incorporated most of his themes from Conan The Barbarian while playing with new ideas. ‘Chambers Of Mirror’ has this swirling motif ostinato throughout the first minute. A proper epic theme comes in at 1:48 with horns, strings and heavy percussion. It continues further in the over 7 minute long cue but the best part hits at 4:36, a proper heroic and inspirational theme, very uplifting and strangely a bit Lord Of The Rings way before it’s time. Wonderful!
One of the best cues of the score is ‘Eating The Elite / Crypt Rocks’ which has a fantastic mix of new and old “battle” themes in the first half and ends it all with a lovely somber theme. ‘Door Lift / Dragon’s Head / Conan The Destroyer’ also has some new motifs worth mentioning. It’s a long but a great cue. One of the best themes from Conan The Barbarian was “The Orgy” and I’m happy it’s back in ‘Dagoth Ceremony (Original Version With Choir)’ and this adaption sounds really great. The choir is specially welcome. ‘Impaling The Guard / Dagoth’s Death’ is another impressive “battle” cue. Why is ‘Pit Band’ so short though? That’s a theme I would love to see expanded. One of my favorite themes of Destroyer.
Now it could be that my ears are waxed with the lovely sound of the re-recording, but I feel that Conan The Destroyer is a more polished album overall. It used the classic themes of Conan The Barbarian well, but it also brings new material and the mix between the two are perfect. It is the same world after all and Poledouris did so well incorporating two scores like it feels as one long score. If I wasn’t lazy I would probably come up with a killer playlist from both scores and just enjoy them, not even in order, but at random. Fact: Conan The Destroyer is one of the best fantasy scores ever made. I wouldn’t put it above Conan The Barbarian though, but it’s a close call.
