Acker Bilk has won immortality on rock oldies radio for his surprise 1962 hit "Stranger on the Shore," an evocative ballad featuring his heavily quavering low-register clarinet over a bank of strings. To the jazz world, though, he has a longer-running track record as one of the biggest stars of Britain's trad jazz boom, playing in a distinctive early New Orleans manner.Tracklist:
The title of this compact disc tells it all - the tracks featured here are just some of Acker’s all time favourites and the loving care he puts into his performances show just that.
‘Stranger On The Shore’ must be one of Acker’s biggest favourites as he wrote it and had a world-wide hit with it, so it just had to be the opening title on this disc. Then you have titles by Bacharach and David; three in fact including ‘Close To You’ and ‘Raindrops Keep Falling On My Head’ where Acker’s Paramount Jazz Band are featured with the strings.
There’s also a couple of titles featuring Acker’s voice as well as his clarinet and they are the Jerome Kern, Oscar Hammerstein II standard ‘The Folks Who Live On The Hill’ and ‘Sugar, the jazz classic from writers Mitchell, Alexander and Pinkard, there’s also some lovely trumpet playing by Mike Cotton on ‘Sugar.' Acker’s band are also featured on ‘The Folks On The Hill’ and ‘A Hundred Years From Today’ and they blend in beautifully with the string orchestra arrangements by pianist Barney Bates and arranger Nick Harrison, who, by the way, has written an absolutely tremendous string arrangement of the
traditional song ‘Going Home’.
It would be easy to just write about each track but after all, the proof of the pudding is in the eating (to quote an incredibly old saying) or up-dating - the proof of the recording is in the listening. The unique sound of Acker’s clarinet and the very fine musical arrangements will, we are sure, make this album one of your favourite things.
