I first noticed the Swedish trio Zeigeist because they made a remix for Universal Poplab. Now their debut album The Jade Motel is released. Zeigeist introduces a very refreshing electropop sound that one could describe as a pop version of The Knife. Especially the vocals remind of some of the tracks very much of that other quite successful Swedish band. Zeigeist moreover gained fame because they tagged their track ‘Tar Heart’ on the P2P networks to an early leaked version of The Knife successful album Silent Shout. Although their main influence is recognizable in their sound, this definitely does not mean they have no face of their own. Their choice in sounds is refreshing compared to the many Depeche Mode influenced synthpop bands, although the obvious Depeche Mode comparison is justified as influence in the danceable ‘Bunny’. Especially tracks such as ‘Black Milk’ and ‘The Lake’ are nice examples of attempts to write the perfect synthpop song, but also ‘Humanitarism’, ‘Wrecked Metal’, ‘Pressurized Chamber’, ‘Dawn Night’, and ‘Tar Heart’ are excellent electropop tunes which include the newest electro sound as well as the atmosphere of the early 80’s music. Zeigeist manages wonderfully to revive the synthetic influence of Kraftwerk into nice and energetic and musicwise surprising songs. It seems that live appearances from Zeigeist are an extrovert adventure comparable to the theatrical act of Fischerspooner. Any which way, The Jade Motel is a debut to dream of and this Swedish band might become big.
