"Yoko Ono/Plastic Ono Band" is the first solo album by Yoko Ono. The album was meant to be a companion piece to John Lennon's stark solo debut "John Lennon/Plastic Ono Band." Both albums hit record store shelves on December 11, 1970, and their nearly identical album covers caused confusion in the marketplace.
Between 1968 and 1970 John Lennon and Yoko Ono released three experimental albums, a few stand-alone singles, and one live album. With the break-up of The Beatles in 1970 Lennon went full force into a solo career, taking his bride, Ono, along for the ride. During this era a Yoko Ono performance was usually found on the b-side of any Lennon or Plastic Ono Band single. She also filled one side of the Plastic Ono Band's album, "Live Peace in Toronto 1969." Now she was given full reign to fill both sides of an LP.
"Yoko Ono/Plastic Ono Band" was released to considerable critical disdain at a time when Ono was being widely blamed for the break-up of The Beatles. Notable exceptions were the estimations of Billboard who called it 'visionary' and critic Lester Bangs who supported it in Rolling Stone. Lennon laughed off any criticism saying, "Yoko breaks through more barriers with one scream than most musicians do in a lifetime."
