The Yardbirds are an English rock band that had a string of hits in the mid 1960s. The group is notable for having started the careers of three of rock's most famous guitarists: Eric Clapton, Jeff Beck, and Jimmy Page, all of whom were in the top five of Rolling Stone's 100 Top Guitarists list. A blues-based band that broadened its range into pop and rock, The Yardbirds were pioneers in guitar innovations of the 1960s: fuzz tone, feedback, distortion, backwards echo, improved amplification, etc. They were included in Rolling Stone's list of the "100 Greatest Artists of All Time", and VH1's "100 Greatest Artists of Hard Rock".
allmusic.com says: Repertoire's Greatest Hits collection was the first CD compilation to combine the Yardbirds' 1964-1965-era hits, owned by Charly Records, with their 1967-1968 EMI-owned singles. The mix is a strange one, juxtaposing such powerful early singles as "For Your Love," "Heart Full of Soul," and "Still I'm Sad" alongside more pop-oriented late-era songs like "Little Games," "Ha Ha Said the Clown," and "Goodnight Sweet Josephine," as well as being decidedly incomplete – without "Over Under Sideways Down" and "Happenings Ten Years' Time Ago" to show how the group closed out its best studio years, it's difficult to appreciate the singles that came after, which were better than they seemed though hardly in league with what came before.
