This album has gone down in history as one of the most important albums of the 80s. The follow up to The Unforgetable Fire, saw Brian Eno and Daniel Lanois returning to the producers chairs, and the album was recorded throughout the fall of 1986. The appearance at Live Aid, and the following Amnesty International tour had brought a lot of attention to U2 in the years since The Unforgettable Fire. When The Joshua Tree was finally released it was very anticipated, and went to the top of the charts around the world.
The album was released in three formats initially, vinyl, cassette and CD. Each format had a unique photo used for the front cover. The cassette has the land in the background above the level of the boys heads, whereas the LP and CD would have the background lower. If you look at the CD vs. the vinyl you can tell that Bono and the Edge overlap more on the vinyl. All looked similar, but if you look closely you can see the difference between the three. Later releases on DCC and 8-Track would reuse the artwork from the initial releases. In 2000, the CD was re-released with the original cover for the vinyl. In 1987 it was never expected that the CD would become such a popular format, and the image from the vinyl was always the image that the designers had seen for the album, so once CD put vinyl to rest the cover was switched to the CD release in the UK.
The Joshua Tree spawned five singles, several promotional items, and a world tour. It remains U2's best selling album at this time.
The bonus audio disk consists of seven B-sides, the single edit of “Where the Streets Have No Name,” the Sun City version of B-side “Silver & Gold,” which features Bono, Steve Jordan and Keith Richards and Ron Wood from the Stones, and five tracks from the Joshua Tree sessions. Some of this material has been available in various forms before and has gained widespread exposure, particularly the B-side “Sweetest Thing,” which received about as much airplay at the time as any of the original album’s A-sides.
As good as most of the unreleased songs are, it’s easy to see why they didn’t make the final cut. Tracks like the B-sides “Walk to the Water” and “Deep in the Heart,” with their stream-of-consciousness vocals, sound half-finished. Other tracks, like “Beautiful Ghost/Introduction to Songs of Experience” and “Drunk Chicken/America,” use the poetry of William Blake and Allen Ginsberg, respectively, and have good ideas as their basis but are not so much songs as aural exercises. “Rise Up” is nothing more than grooves in search of a song. The original B-side of “Silver & Gold,” the rocking “Spanish Eyes” and the aforementioned “Sweetest Thing” are the best and most realized of the lot.
The bonus DVD is extremely well done. It includes U2 Live from Paris, a concert filmed in that city on July 4, 1987, during the Joshua Tree tour; a documentary called Outside It’s America; and videos for the songs “With or Without You” and “Red Hill Mining Town.”
In 2007, U2's landmark 1987 release The Joshua Tree, was digitally remastered from the original analogue tapes to mark 20 years since its release.
In 1987, The Joshua Tree reached Number 1 around the world and won a Grammy for 'Album of the Year', while U2 won the Brit Award for Best International Act and Time Magazine put the band on its cover, proclaiming them 'Rock's Hottest Ticket'.
Including a clutch of the band's biggest ever tracks - I Still Haven't Found What I'm Looking For, Where The Streets Have No Name and With Or Without You - The Joshua Tree went on to sell more than 20 million copies.
The digitally remastered edition came in four formats:
* A standard CD featuring liner notes from Bill Flanagan, lyrics and unseen photographs from long time collaborator Anton Corbijn.
* A double 12" gatefold vinyl format, with the original album pressed across two 180 gram audiophile discs.
* A deluxe edition including a second CD of b-sides and demos from the original album sessions.
* A limited edition box set containing two CD's and a DVD featuring The Joshua Tree Tour live from the Hippodrome in Paris and other rare video footage.

About the BONUS DVD:
- I'm trully sorry, but I can't share a DVD9 (dual layer) with my slow upload speed (30 Kb/s), that's why I decided to extract the audio from the DVD-Video of the Paris concert. The track I used was English LPCM 48000 Hz / 16 Bit / Stereo, LOSSLESS. For more info read the lineage please.
- I didn't want to downsample it to 44100 Hz just to match the Red Book standard, so, if you want to burn it to CD-Rs and listen them on a standalone CD Player, you'll have to downsample the file to 44100 Hz. There are a lot of free softwares, Audacity is a good one that can do this job very well. Of course, Sound Forge or Adobe Audition are better but not free.
- I also didn't want to track the file (split track by track) or faded in or out
- NO normalization was done.
- I made a cuesheet with CD Wave Editor where you can see all the track titles, times, performer when you play it on a PC audio player like foobar2000. See pictures below.
- This way, you have the freedom to do what you want with the file, you can even do an audio-DVD (not DVD-Audio) with programs like Goland Audio DVD Creator or DigiOnAudio2 Professional.
Lineage:
1. Silver CD's ('Album' & 'Bonus Audio CD') -> EAC (Secure Mode / Offset Corrected) -> Test & Copy Image & Create CUE Sheet -> Uncompressed -> WAV (1411 Kbit/s / 44100 Hz / 16 Bits / 2 Channels) -> FLAC frontend -> FLAC (compression level 8) -> AvaxHome
2. Silver DVD ('Bonus DVD') -> Castudio DVD Audio Extractor -> English LPCM (48000 Hz / 16 Bits / Stereo) -> WAV (1536 Kbit/s / 48000 Hz / 16 Bits / 2 Channels) -> FLAC frontend -> FLAC (compression level 8) -> AvaxHome
Extra info:
- Codec used for lossless compression: libFLAC 1.2.1 20070917
- Samplerate: 44100 Hz Stereo / Bitrate: 16 bits (CD 1-2 Album and Bonus CD)
- Samplerate: 48000 Hz Stereo / Bitrate: 16 bits (CD 3 DVD Audio Rip)
