Erotic Drum Band has always been somewhat of an enigma. Even when they burst on the scene in 1978 not much was known about the group.
Some brief facts that we do know is that the creative force behind them was Peter DiMilo and George Cucuzzella. The duo would have other successes in their native Canada, most notably Nightlife Unlimited and Suzy Q. At the time of their first LP release, "Plug Me To Death," the group was managed by Joe LaGreca. LaGreca was on the verge of introducing Carol Jiani to the world….
…When the first 12" single was released, "Action '78," the song gained popularity quickly in the Canadian discos but missed the American market completely. Shortly thereafter Champagne Disques released "Action '78-Part 2" a remix that oddly bore the same label number. The remix caught New York D.J.'s ears and found it's way in to some medleys that circulated around the country. But that was still the extent of their American exposure. A third Champagne Disques 12" single, "Plug Me To Death," was released and was readily snatched up by progressive American jocks. Finally they were getting the U.S. exposure they had been searching for.
A new label forming in New York at the time tracked down the licensing rights for the American distribution of the album. Re-editing the only remaining track from the album that hadn't been released on a 12" single fell into the hands of Paul Poulos and Roy B. for the album release. The newly formed Prism Records released a red vinyl remixed 12" single, (the label's first), of "Love Disco Style." The 12" single was yet another version, this one by Savarese. The song, the only one with vocals, (vocals were by Pat Maiorano), shot straight up the American club charts. Finally the album and it's four tracks received heavy rotation on all the club playlists. "Love Disco Style" became such an enduring hit that nearly two years later John Hagopian would recapture it on the September Records release "Love Christmas Love" as Cold Magic.
1979 was spent coasting on the success of their first album while assembling material for a new album. During the interim DiMilo scored succcess with Nightlife Unlimited. While assembling material for the new album a concious effort was made to update the groups sound. Whereas the first album was largely instrumental and very uptempo, the second one would be more vocalized and decidely more downtempo.
In 1980 when "Touch Me Where It's Hot" debuted on Prism records reviews were mixed. Fans of the previous album were expecting another uptempo sizzler and were disappointed. While on the other hand people unaware of their earlier work embraced it wholeheartedly. A "Midnight Mix" by Richie Rivera of "Pop Pop Shoo Wah" was the only 12" single released and it did quite well. The contrasts between the first and second albums was very apparent. While the first release was high energy and featured white vocalists, the second was downtempo and featured black vocalists. This gave the overall texture of the album a completely different feel. While a second 12" single could have been released of "Dance In Your Pants" one has to wonder why they included "Everybody Get Dancin' " on the album at all? The poor sales of the album lead to the severing of ties with Prism Records and no further Erotic Drum Band released domestically.
In 1982 manager Joe LaGreca took over the reigns of producing the group and they had another hit with "Sweet Seduction" on Matra Records. Original members Bucella, Dirato and Maiorano wrote and played on the uptempo track. They returned to their uptempo roots while updating their sound to a more horn-ladden effect. The results were very pleasing. The group would have one final 12" single on Matra in 1984. "Horn-Y" backed with a remix of "Sweet Seduction" did nicely both in Canada and here in the States. But a variety of factors caused the group's demise. LaGreca was no longer their manager, he was off pursuing other artists. Failure to generate enough sales to merit a full album and the fact that an American distribution deal didn't materialize forced the members into other options. They have since gone on to doing mainly studio work, but for a brief moment they ruled the clubs…..and we thank them.
