With “Again and Again”, the second album from the Swedish-American outfit Thieves Like Us, the band sculpts their vintage electronic sound into honest, sentimental pop. The dreamy nonchalance they exhuded on “Play Music”, their first LP, takes the back seat to more sincere song-writing, reflecting a new maturity in the trio's approach to composition. Recorded in a Paris cellar in early 2009, the songs find Andy, Björn, and Pontus struggling with such themes as failed relationships, alcoholism, and the obsessive yearning for an imaginary soul-mate. With “The Walk” and “One Night With You” the listener finds themselves exploring nocturnal landscapes composed of blissful extended highs punctuated by the ghostly apparitions of lovers past. Other songs like “Never Known Love” and “So Clear” could fit somewhere in the spectrum between The Cocteau Twins and Slowdive. The album concludes with the intimate ballad “Forget Me Not” which draws inspiration as much from Sade as from 70s-era Vangelis and bears a strong message: what goes up, must come down. With “Again and Again”, Thieves Like Us have crafted an emotional juggernaut, a soulful cry echoing through empty streets to reach smoke-filled dance floors.
