The Stranglers were among the very first punk bands, and like many others, had their roots in the UK pub band scene. In fact as a pub band their success was lacking atr best. But punk happened and they fit right in. It could be said they were punk before there was such a thing! Founded in Chiddingfold, England in 1974 by guitarist/vocalist Hugh Cornwell, bassist/vocalist Jean-Jacques Burnell, keyboardist Dave Greenfield and drummer Jet Black. Always dressed in black, playing with a heavy, dark, moody sound (oddly contrasted by Greenfield's often 'happy' organ sound) they were the progenitors of "goth-rock."

Some reviews from www.cduniverse.com….
Punk's parents terribles, the Stranglers courted controversy throughout their early career. Caustic lyrics brought charges of misogyny, although the group suggested that outrage was merely part of the genre's tenet. They answered such criticism of their debut album with the even more uncompromising No More Heroes, a vengeful collection echoing the nihilism of its title. Role-playing apart, there was no denying a musical prowess compressing savage guitar, throbbing bass and swirling organ into vicious, driving sound. Hugh Cornwell's sneering intonation matched the aggression of his accompaniment, but the album also offered indications of the lighter pop style that the quartet would later follow.
No More Heroes - Punk Masterpiece
No More Heroes is the Stranglers Punk masterpiece and is as important as 'Never mind the Bollocks' in defining the genre. This was an extremley offensive album predating gangsta rap stars 'NWA' who would go on to create similar offensive lyrics, but the Stranglers did it first with songs such as 'I feel like a Wog','School Mam' and 'Bring on the Nubiles. Essential listening.

More heroes, not less!
The Stranglers' second offering takes off where the debut disk left off, and turning up the tempo into the bargain. THIS LP IS FANTASTIC! Musically the band were un-stoppable; "Dagenham Dave", "I feel like a wog", "Dead ringer" and the title track which also became a hit single are essential Stranglers listening. This CD also includes the fabbo "5 minutes" which was previously not available on LP. BUT IT!
