The word operetta itself means „little opera” ; as a form it is a comedy which prospered in the second part of the XIX. Century and the beginning of the XX. Century. Overtures, songs , interacts and many chattering are typical for its content.

Its excellent Hungarian representatives are: Imre Kalman (1882 Siofok – 1953 Paris) standing or the Hungarian line of Lehar-school. His operettas (Csardas-queen, the bayadere, marica countess, etc.) met with great success with their playful melodiousness. He lived in the USA from 1940. He wrote his last composition Arizona Lady which was performed in 1954, in the American emigration.

Ferenc lehar (1870 Komarom – 1948 Bad Ischl) world famous composer, who was a swell at the form operetta. He began his career as an orchestral violinist, then he became a military conductor. Mainly he lived in Austria. The serial of his operettas started with the Merry Widow, performed in 1905. His music is the continuation of the operetta-styleof Vıenna, but beside waltz he also uses modern dances. Lehar could exert an influence on emotions very much, and he could make the audience believe even non-existing emotions. His best known compositions are: The Count of Luxemburg, Gipsy Love, Eva, The Land of Smiles, Giuditta, etc.
