This new 2-CD set of 1967 studio and live recordings of Sonny Rollins is given first class treatment with interviews, detailed histories, and commentaries with photographs in an included 98-page booklet. Discovered poorly labeled in the Dutch Jazz Archives, these performances are fiery and powerful. His Dutch bassist Ruud Jacobs and drummer Han Bennink, who while accomplished, wondered how they would manage, yet they met the challenge brilliantly; Rollins gave them plenty of opportunity to solo and explore. Rollin's himself at age 89 had a hand in the production with Zev Feldman, and his interview is included. Aidan Levy, Rollin's biographer, provided notes and full analysis of each tune. Comments on the choice of saxophone manufacturer and mouthpieces were interesting and unusual.

We hear the more lyrical and refined VARA Studio 5 recordings and selections from the live TV broadcast recording at the Go-Go Club, Loosdrecht, and the Academie voor Beeldende Kunst, Arnhem, whose intense, raw, and powerful performances only existed before as taped bootlegs. The trademark Sonny Rollins stream-of-consciousness in performance is present in the concerts as one extended tune leads to another. While these concert recordings are sonically limited, they were cleaned for the digital mastering. As the historical introduction observes, Jazz Giant (or should I say Colossus?) Sonny Rollins was proving in 1967 that jazz was far from dead when the Grateful Dead and Jefferson Airplane were taking popular music elsewhere [for the record, however, thanks to Bill Graham and the eclectic freeform radio jazz DJs of the era, jazz was being discovered by us hippies]. This historically important album will naturally please Rollins fans, but to hear the energy and creativity pouring out of the trio will astound everyone. The concert material were unrehearsed and completely spontaneous! This should be a nominee for Grammy Best Historical Album.
