The day of the Great Train Robbery was also the day of the Searchers' first number one. The Searchers were the Beatles favourite Liverpool group. The took their name from the same John Wayne movie that had inspired Buddy Holly to write That'll Be The Day. Mike Pender (born Michael Prendergast on 3 March 1942) and John McNally (born August 1941) are the two founder members who were still with the group when they performed on the 1981 Royal Variety Show. The other two Searchers on Sweets For My Sweet were Tony Jackson (born 16 July 1940) and Chris Curtis (born Christopher Crummey on 16 August 1941). Unlike most of the successful groups in the first wave of Liverpool success, the Searchers were not managed by Brian Epstein nor produced by George Martin. Their manager was a well-established and highly astute show business entrepreneur, Tito Burns, and their producer a Pye staff producer who would later become a highly successful writer, performer and husband of Jackie Trent, Tony Hatch.
After recording Needles and Pins, Tony Jackson left the Searchers amidst a certain amount of ill-feeling, and formed his own group, the Vibrations. Mike Pender took over as lead vocalist and Frank Allen was brought in on bass from Cliff Bennett's Rebel Rousers. The next session produced their third number one hit, an old Orlons song called Don't Throw You Love Away. The split had apparently left the Searchers' popularity intact. At this stage, the Searchers were the second most popular of the 'beat boom' groups, with only the Beatles having a larger fan club. The Beatles themselves were reported as saying that the Searchers were their favourite group. However, their success had not much longer to run. After Don't Throw Your Love Away, their only major hits were When You Walk In The Room (with its incredible rhyme of 'nonchalant' with 'you I want') which reached number three at the end of 1964, and Goodbye My Love (number four early in 1965). In 1966 drummer Chris Curtis left the group. The occupant of the Searchers' drum stool for the past decade has been Billy Adamson. Curtis made one single which failed and the Searchers' singles also slipped into obscurity. The group is still performing superbly, though, and occasionally crops up on television to remind the fans of their great days in 1963 and 1964.
