In Memoriam is the orchestral version of the Quintet with piano. It was G. Rozhdestvenski who asked Schnittke for an orchestration, the density of the expression being rich enough to support such a transfer (in this, I cannot help but think of the orchestrations of certain Shostakovich quartets by Barshai, the two composers sometimes having common traits). The piano part will be shared between winds and percussion. The strings would suffer little arrangement. The overall transcription remains literal, the instrumentation rich and colorful. This work, whose origin is the death of the composer's mother, is marked by great sadness and continuous darkness. The 5 movements are linked fairly quickly, the first and last are both moderato.
Alfred Schnittke - In Memoriam and Viola Concerto (1989) {BIS Schnittke Edition, BIS-447} (Item #4)

The begins on a 5-note motif heard throughout the work. It looks like a complaint around which turns a tormented but calm orchestra. At the end, a very long repeating pattern on a single note swells and quickly subsides. The II is a ghostly waltz where we find the motif of 5 notes but where everything is unstable, the waltz struggling with the orchestra which seeks to submerge it. The rhythm becomes obsessive, a crescendo becomes violent then slowly dies out in the middle of the rhythmic saccades of the waltz. Three times in succession, the obsessive repetition on the same note is heard during the III, broken by an fff chord of the organ; the movement of the strings is reminiscent of imitations of voices close to those of Penderecki. Organ, harpsichord, tube bells, 5-note motif repeated over and over which seems to be fighting against the whole orchestra, such is the Lento followed without interruption by the Pastoral Moderato where the organ becomes soloist in the statement of a passacaille theme repeated 14 times; the initial pattern returns but modified, more peaceful; the waltz rhythm reappears briefly, then everything goes out on the organ in the high notes …

The concerto for viola (1985) was written under the impulse of Yuri Bashmet, dedicatee of the work. The I begins with long strings on strings on which the soloist seems to agree and ends in a fff chord with tube bells. Then a baroque trill with harpsichord and classical cadence will return throughout the work. This kind of introduction is followed by an Allegro molto with an insistent pattern in the bass from which the viola escapes in a rather lyrical way. A waltz rhythm gives a dance-like appearance disturbed by interventions by soloists seeking to break the melody. The viola plays motifs as an accompaniment to the orchestra, rehearsing the old-fashioned cadence followed by a more calm and lyrical episode, a sort of ghostly dreamlike. Modernism returns to the charge, then a piano plays a three-beat rhythm before a final cadence on the viola. A percussive march fff completes everything. The III begins with a solo cadence, then return from the baroque trill, a glissando on the strings brings a chorale to the brass, then return from the trill which seems to bring about a change of direction each time. Important crescendo with percussion, tube bells, harpsichord then haunting rhythm to percussion, held strings, on which the viola dies slowly …

The Japanese violist N. Imaï is excellent here, very well accompanied by the Malmo orchestra under the inspired direction of Lev Markiz. Very extensive sound recording that requires playing often with the button!
