François Petit commença la guitare très jeune et étudia la lutherie, se fabriquant sa propre guitare sur laquelle il joue encore. Après avoir suivi des cours au CIM, une école de jazz à Paris, il joua dans différentes formations tel que Les Portejazztels, Le Parkinson Band ou encore Le Père François. A Lille, il rencontra Arnaud Van Lancker, avec qui il fonda le groupe Swing Gadjé. Ce groupe jouera durant six ans, puis François Petit s'en ira à Amiens où il monta le trio Samarabalouf.
François Petit rencontra Pierre Margerin un soir de concert, et lui proposa de l'accompagner au sein de Samarabalouf. Celui-ci est un musicien autodidacte, bassiste, batteur et guitariste, qui joua dans divers groupes comme Danny Wilde, Posse Thieves et Strangeman.
Luc Ambry offrit ses services à Samarabalouf en apprenant qu'ils cherchaient un contrebassiste. Violoncelliste issu du Conservatoire de Picardie, il s'adonna durant trois ans à cet instrument avant de passer à la contrebasse et de se mettre à l'électro-acoustique et de jouer dans divers groupes de world music, jazz et free jazz.
Arnaud Van Lancker les rejoignit sur leur deuxième album et sur la tournée qui en découla. On le retrouve aussi sur leur enregistrement live.
Style :
Les morceaux de Samarabalouf n'incluent aucun chant, à l'exception de Profitez-en et de quelques déclames sur Skalipso. Le quatrième album introduit la voix dans presque tous les morceaux, mais il ne s'agit que de vocalises, de chœurs, de textes parlés ou de voix d'accompagnement, mais à l'exception du morceau "L'étoile au Sahara", cela n'est pas assimilable à des chants.
Au premier abord, et au vu de leur formation, on pourrait considérer Samarabalouf comme un groupe de jazz manouche. Pourtant, même s'ils empruntent allègrement à ce genre musical, leur style est plus près de la chanson française, mais sans paroles, ou du rock acoustique, que du swing. Les rythmes rocks sont très présents, et bien qu'il s'agisse de musique acoustique à sonorités tziganes et d'Europe Centrale, cela casse le tempo swing. De plus, leurs mélodies sont comme des chansons : il n'est pas rare qu'une oreille les découvrant pour la première fois s'attende à ce que débutent les chants après tels ou tels mouvements.
De fait, bien que pouvant être rattaché au jazz manouche, Samarabalouf a créé son propre style, sorte de modernisation de l'héritage de Django Reinhardt.
