Classical / Romantic
Among the virtuosity warhorses in the piano repertory, the five concertos by Camille Saint-Saens have established an appealing reputation. The audiences worldwide are enchanted to attend performances by great virtuosos in utterly melodious and harmonic works with dazzling keyboard pyrotechnics and musical ideas of the most refined quality. Yet, a very few of the professional pianists dare to approach this pianistic output by one of the most prolific and multifaceted artists of the European culture (composer, playwright, philosopher, astronomer, archaeologist, poet etc). To find the proper touch, to balance the wild virtuosity with the subtle musical concept, to get the deepest level of significance in these works – are all difficult tasks that require a high level of artistry (not only in pianistic terms). Pascal Roge is one of the most entitled pianists to perform these masterpieces, as he has .long exhibited a refined craftsmanship (certified from the beginning of his career by the prestigious first prizes in “George Enescu” and “Marguerite Long” competitions, respectively as by the flattering invitations from all over the world to perform along with the most reputed orchestras). A long-standing partner, the conductor Charles Dutoit is pairing Roge on this wonderful twofer. They performed together all the five piano concertos by Saint-Saens with various super-class orchestras from the Britain capital: Philharmonia Orchestra, Royal Philharmonic Orchestra and London Philharmonic Orchestra. Of course, the celebrated no.2 and the last one no.5 (“The Egyptian”) are – as always – the favorites, but even the somehow neglected nos 1, 2 and 4, get refined renditions. The sound quality, the orchestral vision and the… atmosphere are excellent recorded.
Without enjoying an overwhelming advertising, Pasca Roge proves here that he is a true super-star of the piano, an accomplished musician who can brilliantly face the most demanding repertories. The clarity of his playing, the joy which surfaces the proceedings, the elegant touch – singles him out as a revelation. At least, for me!
