With songs unleashed from the soul of Roger Daltrey, Under a Raging Moon is a short voyage into the psyche of an aging rock star who has plenty to reveal. Daltrey's bitterness about growing older while gasping for every last breath of a youth gone by gives this album heart and a certain emotional dimension, coming to a head on the title track. His thunderous but passionate ode to his former friend and drummer Keith Moon is a fervent downpour of frustration that can be truly felt inside every line of the song. A spectacular drum solo from Mark Brzezicki is a modest tribute to the late Moon and adds depth indefinitely. A multitude of drummers appear on the album, musically paying their respects, including Cozy Powell, Roger Taylor, and Stewart Copeland. The guitar slashing "Let Me Down Easy," penned by Bryan Adams, is a perfectly formulated rock song intensified through Daltrey's energy. While this song and all of the others act as outlets for his pent up anger, each one is sung, and sometimes screamed, with genuine passion and heart. Even the slower songs, like "The Pride You Hide," display a moving amount of sincerity. Not every song is a treasure, but all contain a intangible character that only Daltrey can muster. –by Mike DeGagne, allmusic.com

    Artist: Roger Daltrey
Born: Mar 1, 1944 in Hammersmith, London, England
    Years Active: 1960 to present
    Genre: Pop/Rock
Styles: Rock & Roll, Hard Rock, Pop/Rock, Soft Rock
    Instruments: Vocals, Harmonica

Who lead singer Roger Daltrey forged a parallel solo career beginning in 1973, when the group had begun to fall apart in the aftermath of Quadrophenia. Born March 1, 1944 in London, Daltrey grew up in the same Shepherd's Bush neighborhood as future Who bandmates Pete Townshend and John Entwistle, performing with them as the Detours as early as his late teen years. Over time, Daltrey developed into one of rock's most powerful lead vocalists, a position to which he staked his claim on the Who's 1971 masterpiece Who's Next; his onstage persona was one of macho swagger, accompanied by such antics as twirling his microphone like a lasso.

Daltrey first traveled the solo route in 1973 with an album titled simply Daltrey, featuring mostly material penned by a then-unknown Leo Sayer that served as a departure from the Who's signature hard rock sound. The Who reconvened for The Who by Numbers in 1975, a year that saw Daltrey release his second solo album, Ride a Rock Horse, and appear in Ken Russell's films Lisztomania (as composer Franz Liszt) and an adaptation of Tommy (in the title role). While the Who went on hiatus for several years, Daltrey released One of the Boys in 1977 and appeared in the 1978 film The Legacy. During the Who's post-Keith Moon era, Daltrey co-produced and starred in the film McVicar, a biography of train robber John McVicar; members of the Who appeared on its soundtrack, which essentially served as a full-fledged Daltrey album and found him bridging the gap between hard rock and the pop songs of his earlier solo work. After the Who officially disbanded in 1983, Daltrey's solo albums became uniformly hard-rocking affairs, most notable among them 1985's Under a Raging Moon. In addition to the Who's 1989 reunion tour, Daltrey has since continued to act in occasional television and film roles, as well as releasing the solo album Rocks in the Head in 1992. –by Steve Huey, allmusic.com

Roger Daltrey stepped out on his own in a big way when "Raging Moon" was released. Mostly spurred by the MTV play of "After The Fire," this album had a great combination. Daltrey in fine vocal form, a good backing band, good production and great songs. Some have said this was like a Who album, and perhaps it was, though Daltrey has staked out territory for his voice on other recordings (witness his work on "Daltrey," doing Dave Courtney/Leo Sayer tunes).
This one just rocked from end to end–"Fire," "Move Better In The Night," and the title track are among the better tracks, while Bryan Adams and Jim Vallance contributed "Let Me Down Easy," which had a minor bit of play on MTV and radio (I think). Roger also handled the ballads again–"The Pride You Hide" and "Love Me Like You Do" were well done. Drummers and likewise also get a huge thrill out of the title song's use of 8 drummers, including Stewart Copeland, Mark Brzezecki (I hope I got his name right) of Big Country and others. Interesting, but I wished they'd cranked the drums a bit more. Exceptional, one of Daltrey's best on his own. –By tgfabthunderbird, amazon.com

New Years Eve 2003. . .I was standing in the kitchen listening to VH1 Classic when I heard the opening notes to After the Fire. I couldn't beleive it! I yelled out: "Oh My Gosh!" and ran to my living room, grabbing the controller on the way and collapsed on the couch, wondering how this song would make me feel 20 years later. I had only seen the video once or twice back in 1985 and never heard the song on the radio , but it had always stayed with me. It came out two years after the death of a friend of mine. I was madly in love with his girlfriend and when he died I spiraled into a deep depression which I never fully recovered from. This song stayed with me and seemed to say everything I couldn't say or be to her (even though it isn't about unrequited love). We were the classic star-crossed lovers; I was the heavy-metal band poor kid from the wrong side of the tracks, she was the rich girl who probably thought I'd never amount to anything and told me I reminded her too much of her fallen lover. (12/31/03) The lump in my throat grew, the hot tears rolled down my cheeks and it was all I could do to keep from bawling as Daltrey belted out the lyrics. My teenaged daughters and my wife stared, wondering what was the matter. . . A Beautiful, Powerful song that will haunt my soul for eternity. . . .–-By Stephan P Kelly, amazon.com

I really like this album more than any other Daltrey solo album that I've heard. There are 6 excellent hard rocking songs on this CD that are some of his best work; DON'T TALK TO STRANGERS,BRINGING DOWN PARADISE,UNDER A RAGING MOON,AFTER THE FIRE,LET ME DOWN EASY, and MOVE BETTER IN THE NIGHT. The rest of the songs are good, but not great. Roger's vocals are strong throughout the album as well as the production, mixing, and musicianship of the session players. If I was to buy only one Roger Daltrey CD, I would pick this one. –By Mike S, amazon.com
