Pandit Ravi Shankar first explored the similarities between Indian music and Jazz in the album, Improvisations (1962), which featured Bud Shank. He gave lessons in Indian music to John Coltrane and Don Ellis and composed the piece, Rich a la Rakha, for Buddy Rich and his own erstwhile tabla accompanist, Alla Rakha. For the Bombay festival, Jazzmine (1980), he wrote pieces for, among others, saxophonist John Handy. Note: Recording Produced In Collaboration With Jazz India Organisers of Jazz Yatra Festival.
"Jazz Mine" is one of the ambitious projects of Ravi Shankar which was Originally recorded live in 1980 as part of Bombay festival with collaboration of Jazz India Organizers of Jazz Yatra Festival. This collaboration features many national and international artists including Vikku Vinayakram, Louis Banks, Hari Shankar, Vellore Ramabhadran, George Adams, Mike Richmond etc. Coming to the performance of this album, It was divided into five pieces as noted in tracklist. The first part i.e. Prashanti starts with a vocal introduction of Ravi Shankar and then evolves into a typical Indian Welcome song in a pure classical way. 'Raagank' starts with a beautiful piano intro and took over by beautiful sitar melodies and introduces the other instruments such as violin, tabla, Jazz Drums, Murali etc. The third track i.e. 'Taalank' devoted to South Indian Percussion Music which introduces the traditional Carnatic/South Indian Percussion instruments such as Mridangam, Kanjira, Ghatam etc. 'Deshank', the 4th piece spotlights the beautiful solos of Shehnai and is accompanied by Khurdak, the little kettledrums/folk drums. Misharank, the 5th and final piece of this album is devoted to jazz fusion where Indian and Western instruments fuses in a beautiful passion. Initially released on PolyDor LP in 1980, this become surprisingly very obscure one. Now, this has been re-released with digipak treatment but unfortunately with no linear notes and no remastering, Yet, thanks to Universal Music for bringing back this historical recording to CD era.
