The Ramones - All The Stuff (And More) - Vol. 2 (1991) RESTORED

In the secret history of Rock & Roll, New York punk was America's Merseybeat, and the Ramones were its kings. Their sound - Johnny and Dee Dee's relentless guitar barrage paced by the flat thwat of Tommy's drums, and fronted by Joey's inimitable Anglo-Queens lead bleat-was ferociously exciting. Here, anew, were discovered the endless exhilarating possibilities of three basic chords, the fun of noise, the thrill of velocity. The grunge-and-thud of heavy metal were appropriated as formal elements (Of course!, we said, slapping our heads) and applied to glorious pop tunes (Brilliant!). Rock & Roll had seemed… almost dead, actually-tuckered and predictable, dozing off into a sort of post-60's dotage. The Ramones made it sound invincible again. Saved its life, you might say.

The second volume of All the Stuff (And More) compiles the Ramones' third and fourth albums – Rocket to Russia and Road to Ruin – onto one compact disc, adding several live cuts, demos, and B-sides as bonus tracks. Like its predecessor, All the Stuff (And More), Vol. 2 suffers slightly from its length, which happens to contradict the loud-fast nature of the band's songs and albums, yet the music isn't hurt by its presentation. Rocket to Russia is one of the classic Rock & Roll albums, and while Road to Ruin isn't as consistent, it does have its moments, making All the Stuff (And More), Vol. 2 a good bargain.
