Although during the 50s merengue began as a commercial musical style, it was not until the 80s when lived its golden age. In the late 80s the rhythm section was musically modified and simplified, while ceased to be a mere transcriber of internationally famous melodies. At that time the Cocoband emerged, led by Alfonso "Pochi" Vásquez. Rich style rhythm, strong personality and simple musical structure assumed them immediate popular success and recognition as orchestra revelation in Dominican Republic.
