This is one of Moondog's finest albums. An eccentric mix of moods ranging from warm and energetic pieces (my favourite is Chaconne in G) to solemn organ pieces which to me sound like quirky Bach.
Cover notes:
VIKING I
was written on the occasion of the Mars Expedition of the Americans in the summer of 1976.
It is written in the form of a chaconne, in which a 16-bar chord formation is constantly repeated. At each repetition new voices are added. The melody and contralto form a 2-part counterpoint, with several reversals. Originally designed for orchestra, the piece is played here only by one instrument, the Celesta (by Louis Hardin). This instrument seemed particularly suitable for conveying the desired spherical-crystalline mood. Another "space effect" was achieved by placing a ring modulator on one of the drum parts.
The 5/4 rhythm is countered by a 5/8 rhythm in the course of the piece.
CHACONNE IN G
Hardin's style, the combination of European, classical elements and western rhythms, stands out in this work. He has combined the classical form of the chaconne with rhythmic elements of jazz. The base is a 4-bar harmonic pattern over which a theme with variations repeats itself. The development is a double 2-voice canon.
This Chaconne, like many of Hardin's works, belongs to the group of the so-called Tonata. Hardin himself created this term. The tonata is clearly in the tradition of the sonata, but differs enough to justify a new relationship.
There is no universal law, as in the sonata, yet all works of this genre have one thing in common: the dependence on the laws of counterpoint (canon, ground), which Hardin often obeys far more rigorously than the "old masters."
HEIMDALL FANFARE
All voices of these 9-voice canons in the Doric key were played on a French horn, successive voices each one octave apart.
This piece is one of Hardin's most demanding and extensive work so far, a so-called sound saga "The Creation", in which he represents with cosmic means cosmic becoming and decay. The interpreter is a young musician from Canada, Guy Carmichael.
ROMANCE IN G
is the slow 2nd movement of another tonata, the String Quartet in C.
The doubly 2-voice Canon is developed in the course of the sentence to a mirror canon.
All string works were recorded by the Pannonia Quartet, which consists of two Hungarian, one Czech and one German musician: Gabor Gui, Bertalan Ikrenyi, Ludovik Sandrik and Klaus König.
IN VIENNA
This work is originally written for orchestra, but is presented here by the celesta with drum accompaniment. It can be described as a kind of nostalgic waltz, which reveals Hardin's handwriting very clearly in the rhythm - it is a waltz in the 5/4 rhythm.
First, the theme is presented in the bass, later in the treble. In the reprise, other voices are added. The performer of this work is Malte Heygster, the former head of the music school in Recklinghausen.
CHACONNE IN C
Originally this playful piece was written for piccolo and strings. Here, performed on the organ, it wins a completely different, somewhat reminiscent of street organs character. This work is also created in 5/4 rhythm.
All other organ works belong to the collection "Logrundr Book I for organ", with 25 works in all major and minor keys, beginning and ending with works in C major. The name, Logrundr, is a composite word of the composer and at the same time a reference to the technique of composition: "Log" (reason, law) stands for the strictest musical form, the canon; "grundr" (am. ground) names a recurring bass figure, because all works begin with an ostinato bass theme (pedals), to which then two more voices occur in the strict canon (manuals).
