This release contains McCoy Tyner’s first two albums as a leader, Inception (Impulse AS-18) and Reaching Fourth (Impulse AS-33) in their entirety. Both LPs present the pianist in a trio format backed by such expert musicians as bassists Art Davis and Henry Grimes, and drummers Elvin Jones and Roy Haynes. McCoy's lush, rippling piano helped make masterpieces out of several 1960-65 John Coltrane albums. During that time, he established himself as a leader with his magnificent Impulse! LPs Inception ('62) and Reaching Fourth ('63); his trio dazzles on the two Tyner-penned title tracks plus Theme for Ernie; Old Devil Moon; Blues for Gwen; Sunset; Effendi , and more!

To celebrate Impulse! Records' 50th anniversary, Verve has released a series called 2 on 1, which by pairs important albums-some of which has never appeared on CD format from the famed label.
This release has John Coltrane's pianist (& sole surviving member of his quartet) McCoy Tyner's debut as a leader Inception & his 4th release, rightly named Reaching Fourth As standalones, it's unlikely I would have brought both of them- at least in CD format. But these 2 releases fit well together as one. This is my 1st time hearing Tyner play without Coltrane present & I'm surprised to see his playing style influenced a number of other pianists like Chick Corea.
The music featured in this disc is, of course outstanding. Tyner's Trio is playing a set of originals & standards. While all 12 songs in this set are good, I esp. love "Inception", "Sunset" (very beautiful ballad), "Effendi" & "Blues Back (very bluesy sound indeed.) Other musicians featured include bassist Art Davis & fellow JW Coltrane Quartet member Elvin Jones for "Inception" while "Reaching Fourth" features Henry Grimes & Roy Haynes on bass & drums respectfully.
Of the releases in the 2 on 1 Impulse! Series, I find this to be the most well balanced along with Art Blakey's & Chico Hamilton's. It's also cheaper to get this than to buy the 2 albums featured separately. Even if you already have the two Lps on discs, I still recommend getting this as it's well remastered & the original liner notes are well planted in the booklet. 5 STARS.
