In the early 1960s, Martha Argerich was only twenty years old, but an already busy career. So full that the miracle from Argentina feels the need to take a break and recharge (rebuild) after such a whirlwind. "The young Argerich" that we invite you to find here is the one before this first silence, before her resounding victory at the Concours Chopin 1965.
Fortunately, the microphones accompanied him for a long time already. Our journey begins in 1955: shortly before flying to Vienna to follow the teaching of Friedrich Gulda, a thirteen-year-old Argerich descends the arpeggios of Etude op. 10 No.1 by Chopin with crazy insolence and aplomb. A few years later, it is with this same introduction that she will scotch the Warsaw jury.

The beautiful summer of 1957 was marked by two successes at the Busoni Competition and that of Geneva, where his virtuosity worked wonders in the romantic repertoire, in particular with Liszt. When her Leggierezza in Bolzano seems not to touch the ground, Argerich proves in Hungarian Rhapsody n ° 6 that she has made Gulda's maxim ("to enter the piano") her own and above all that she understands all music by instinct. that she addresses.
Another piece of bravery in 1960, where she delivers to the microphones of Radio Cologne her only studio engraving of Schumann's Toccata, a piece she plays
yet regularly … as a warm-up. If only this Toccata remained for all Argerich's testimony, its octaves at 3 '20 "would be enough to grant it a place in the pantheon of twentieth century pianists.
Devilish Chopin
1960 is also the year of her first recording for Deutsche Grammophon, where, between Prokofiev's Toccata, two rhapsodies by Brahms and aerial Games by Ravel, Martha Argerich prepares the ground for her triumph with Chopin. by fixing one of the most beautiful Barcarolle in the history of the disc and a Scherzo n ° 3 in the form of diabolical suggestion.
This portrait also offers us the opportunity to find the pianist in scores that she will later leave aside. This is first of all the case of a Quicksilver Mozart Concerto No. 21, both spiritual and nostalgic, accompanied by Peter Maag and the Cologne Radio Symphony Orchestra on September 5, 1960 (she performed nineteen years old).
There follows an astonishing Beethoven Sonata No. 7, a few days later, in which the obviousness of the style strikes once again, whether in the impetuosity of rapid movements or in a Largo with exemplary concentration. In front of these first sparkling fires, should we repeat here our regrets in front of the small handful of the composer's sonatas on which Argerich has agreed to focus?
