Having made two superb psychedelic albums and gigged with the Doors, Frank Zappa, Pink Floyd, the Velvet Underground and many others, in June 1969 the Mandrake Memorial came to London. The plan was to record with famed producer Shel Talmy (the Kinks, the Who, Pentangle), but when that fell through they persevered alone. Long thought to be lost, 3 Part Inventions anticipates the woozy, dreamlike vibe of their 1970 masterpiece Puzzle, combining eerie vocals, trippy guitar and otherworldly electronics to create a unique whole. Transferred directly from the master tape, it s released here for the first time, together with a detailed band history, rare images, two previously unheard outtakes from a 1969 acetate, and a rare radio interview.
For anyone that has ever enjoyed any release by The Mandrake Memorial, particularly their third LP, "Puzzle", this should be an essential purchase. Believe me, as a fan of 45 years standing, I am thrilled with this release. Why? Because this is an essential part of their output, previously never heard in any format. Yes, there are elements that would later turn up on the aforementioned "Puzzle" LP; and it is interesting to hear these earlier versions but there is also a true wealth of previously unheard songs that stand equal with all of their other recordings.
Musically, something of a challenge at first listen, but so were their other albums. This is what makes them so rewarding as a band, they challenge the listener to follow them and trust them, to keep listening. Because when we do, it all falls into place as the guitars and keyboards fall into place and the inner beauty in all of these songs emerges. So, musically, a fabulous time. ESSENTIAL LISTENING.
