Lawnmower Deth were an interesting English thrash metal band of the late 1980s and early 1990s, who parodied the genre and recorded three-and-a-half studio albums…

The band originally formed in Ravenshead, Nottinghamshire,England in 1987 under the name SCRAWM, releasing one demo - Demented Genius. Realising that thrash metal and a sense of humour could go hand in hand, the band renamed to Lawnmower Deth, changed some members and (after 2 demos) were signed by Earache Records in 1989. Their first official release was a split album, shared with another band - Metal Duck. Lawnmower Deth's side of the record was entitled Mower Liberation Front and positive responses led to their first full-length effort, Ooh Crikey, It's… Lawnmower Deth.
The band covered several famous songs in their time, including Fleetwood Mac's "The Chain", Motorhead's "Motörhead", Squeeze's "Up the Junction", The Osmonds' "Crazy Horses" and Kim Wilde's "Kids in America" which was released as the band's only single in 1991. Their sense of humour extended into their cheap but enjoyable music videos. Both "Kids in America" and "Lawnmowers for Heroes, Comics for Zeros" (from second album Return of the Fabulous Metal Bozo Clowns) were recorded on home video cameras and edited in an amateur fashion. The third, and final, album Billy saw the band try to take a slightly different direction, verging towards the kind of punk feel being pioneered by the likes of Green Day at the time. Poor sales and less popular live dates made the band decide to call it a day.

Lawnmower Deth's biggest claim to fame was having a sense of humor in the dead-serious world of heavy metal, and, not surprisingly, that same quality also proved their ultimate undoing. Based in Mansfield, England, the band was founded in 1987, at the height of the thrash metal movement, which already seemed to take itself less seriously than most metallic subgenres (most notably, Bermuda shorts-sporting New Yorkers Anthrax). Lawnmower Deth's members decided to adopt silly stage names, to boot: singer Peter Lee became Qualcast "Koffee" Mutilator, guitarists Steve Nesfield and Gavin "Paddy" O'Malley became Concord Face Ripper and Scitzophrenic Rotary Sprintmaster, respectively, bassist Chris Parkes became Mightymo Destructimo, and drummer Chris Flint became Explodin' Dr. Jaggers Flymo. Two demos and two years later, Lawnmower Deth made their official debut via a split release with the equally comical Metal Duck, then signed with Earache Records for 1990's full-length, Ooh Crikey! It's Lawnmower Deth!, featuring a whopping 25, slapstick thrash tunes. These were embraced for their novelty value by many critics and fans, eager for a fresh and fun variety of their favorite musical genre; but Lawnmower Deth barely got a chance to capitalize on tour, before the inevitable backlash began rearing its ugly head. 1991's Kids in America EP was probably their first tactical mistake, but then, covering ‘80s new wave hits was all the rage among UK metal bands at the time, so maybe it was simply a case of jokes that were only funny the first time, because ‘92's second full album, The Return of the Fabulous Metal Bozo Clowns, seemed more pathetic than amusing. New guitarist Kevin Papworth (ex-Acid Reign) probably spent more time figuring out his stage name (Baron Kev Von Thresh Meister Silo Stench Chisel Marbels), than ideas for Lawnmower Deth's next album, which this time was sparingly entitled Billy. The band broke up almost immediately after its releases in 1994, with singer Peter Lee subsequently taking a job behind the scenes with Earache. Lawnmower Deth did reunite in order to perform a proper farewell London gig the next year, but even that hardly gave them the last laugh, and the band's name has slipped into obscure footnote status since.

После серии полулюбительских демо-лент, в 1988 году музыкантами был записан материал для первого мини-альбома, который по инициативе фирмы RKT был совмещен на одном виниле с работой другой, схожей по стилю, хардкоровой банды Metal Duck. На ней музыканты протоптали тропинку к будущему признанию, вволю поиздевались над всякими экстремальщиками от Venom до Napalm Death. Здесь стоит заметить, с самого начала творческой деятельности, музыка коллектива носила чисто развлекательный характер, и шумный, сырой и пока ещё недостаточно мелодичный "Mower Liberation Front" можно отнести разве-что к разряду экспериментального стёба, который лишь два года спустя вышел на качественно новый уровень. Тем временем, дебютный сплит принёс первые дивиденты в лице рекрутов с Earache Records, которые просто не смогли пройти мимо такого "безобразия", и следующий полнометражный альбом "Ooh, Crickey, It’s… Lawnmower Deth" вышел уже на более значимом лейбле. На этой пластинке Lawnmower Deth постарались соединить воедино всё лучшее и самое смешное, что было создано в жанре хардкор-трэша и с энтузиазмом и выдумкой отнеслись к написанию каждой, даже самой короткой песни. Здесь можно легко обнаружить и чистый панк, и грязный трэш, и скабрезные инструменталы, и просто мелодичные измывательства над бесчисленными металлическими клише. Однозначный шедевр жанра, благодаря которому Lawnmower Deth навечно застолбили себе небольшой, но очень памятный, монументик в зале славы британского хардкора.

На своём втором диске-гиганте, металлические клоуны спустились с космических высот, чтобы окончательно прочистить мозги и уши заматеревшим трешерам и прочим любителям экстремальной сцены. В своём стремлении обстебать всё и вся, на этот раз, Lawnmower Deth удалось превзойти самих себя в умении сотворить апокалиптический винегрет и записать диск вечно претендующий на звание лучшей пластинки года, но не попадающей в чарты исключительно из-за тотального отсутствия чувства юмора у музыкальных критиков и дурного вкуса безликой массы фанатов. Уму непостижимое стилистическое месиво (трэш, дес, дум, панк, ска, регги, индастриал..) под силу разложить на ингридиенты лишь самому искушённому эксперту, или лишь самому тупому - ибо, подобная акция лишена какого-либо здравого смысла! Вся пластинка воспринимается на одном дыхании как единое целое, и по другому слушать её просто никак невозможно.
