Composed in 1989, this electro-acoustic composition contains fascinating formal (transformational) logic programs that generate electronic and acoustic pieces; all of these programs were developed using the HMSL (Hierarchical Music Specification Language) designed by composers Phil Burk, Larry Polansky, and David Rosenboom. This piece is imbued throughout with the feeling of mysteries in the Cabalistic tradition.
Various sections of the work are: B'rey'sheet" (In the beginning…), which has computer-generated melodic transformations of traditional Hebrew tropes and melodies used for singing the Torah; Cantillation Study No. 1 for Jody Diamond, for voice and electronics; Four Voice Canons Nos. 3-6 (No. 3 for computer alone, No. 4 for marimbas, No. 5 for percussion, No. 6 for computer alone); Simple Actions – Rules Of Compossibility for voice and live performance computer; and Psaltery, dedicated to composer Lou Harrison. This is a poetic and beautiful CD that reveals another pathway for computer music.
