Alexander Scriabin, whose 150th anniversary we celebrated in 2022, and Sergei Rachmaninoff, one year his junior, were rivals at the Moscow Conservatory as students in both piano and composition. At the piano final exam in 1891, Rachmaninoff was awarded first prize and Scriabin second – it’s fascinating just to imagine what this rivalry between music history’s most famous classmates had been like. Subsequently, they went their separate ways; in particular, Scriabin became drawn to Nietzsche’s Übermensch theory and Blavatsky’s theosophy and his musical style changed drastically, leading to his so-called music of mysticism with the heavy use of progressive harmonies.

From the early works of these two composers, this CD focuses on the pieces with the theme of “fantasy”. Strictly speaking, Rachmaninoff’s Second Sonata is a work of his middle period and strays somewhat from the theme; nevertheless it is a masterpiece of explosive energy and portrays a mysterious and fantastical world within a sonata-form framework. Historically, the “fantasy” is a genre that goes back to Bach’s time, and takes a wide range of forms including free and large-scale forms, but in the works of Scriabin and Rachmaninoff, the “fantasy” element is more in the content rather than in its free structure. I hope you will enjoy the fantastical worlds of the two composers. I have been planning this “Scriabin and Rachmaninoff” recital and CD project for a while.

Amidst the dramatic changes in the international situation involving Russia, I debated whether I should proceed, but in the end I came to the conclusion that to record the wonderful works of these two exceptional composers born 150 years ago would be a worthwhile project and decided to go ahead. I am deeply grateful that the CD is now ready for distribution, and I would like to take this opportunity to express my sincere gratitude to everyone who has been involved in the production ofthis disc.
