Considering this is based on a 40 year old bootleg from an open-air festival, it's amazing that the end product is so good. Yes, there are obvious limitations in the sound quality, with a fair amount of distortion on vocals and brass, but the performance itself is simply stunning. The KHB line-up at the time featured Dave Caswell and Lyle Jenkins, and their contributions are first class throughout.
Opening with a rocking You Can't Take It with You, the band then offer The Time Is Near from the then current album of the same name; this does suffer quite a lot from the distortion, but the brass riffs and Miller Anderson's gutsy guitar solo give the song more balls than the studio original. Proceedings then move into the almost expected Halfbreed Suite, which at 29 and a half minutes is the longest version available - the others being on Little Big Band and British Radio Sessions. Again, the sheer enthusiasm and quality of the performance overcomes any issues with sound quality, and you almost don't want it to finish at all. The set concludes with a 15 minute Think It Over, which although not my favourite KHB tune, is equally good in its delivery. After hearing this, I am even more flummoxed as to why this band was n't massive, in so many ways they had everything going for them. Maybe it was timing, lack of promotion or just bad luck.
If you're an audiophile who demands pristine sound, then this ain't for you, but as a live record of an amazing band you have to feel privileged to hear a wonderful performance from some top-class musicians. Just stick it on and imagine you're in the middle of a field surrounded by a noisy crowd, and let the music take you.
On first hearing its Keef Hartleys best album. I thought I was going to hear a repeat of halfbreed but this has more balls. Sounds like King Crimson playing jazz fusion with a great blues vocal. If you like keef hartley, buy it.
