Digipak edition of this 1972 album from the Jazz great featuring five bonus tracks taken from the album Love And Understanding (1973). Although Jimmy Heath released an album per year between 1959 and 1964, he would undergo an eight-year recording hiatus as a leader before returning to the studios in 1972. This CD contains the first album Heath recorded after his break. The tracks have a cohesive group sound and showcase the individuality and force of Jimmy's compositions coupled with his instrumental brilliance as a flautist and soprano and tenor saxophonist.
Be the first one on your block to add this largely ignored classic from 1972. It was a staple of my vinyl collection from the moment I bought it way back when, so I was delighted to find it had been reissued from its original Muse label on CD and immediately picked it up. Truth be told, I didn't need to be reacquainted with it, as I had continued to play it over the years, so this wasn't a case of marvelling at how well an album held up after years of listening neglect. Nonetheless, it's worth noting how beautifully fresh Heath's playing remains 40 years after "The Gap Sealer" made its debut.

It opens memorably with "Heritage Hum," which for me brings up images of cotton fields, stooped backs and hot southern sun. (Side note: check out James Moody's version on his album of the same name. Great version in its own right.) Fittingly, Heath steams through it with passion. There is a great version of the standard "Invitation," a couple of songs that sound like they should be standards – the title cut and the aptly named "A Sound for Sore Ears" – and a nod to multicultural sounds, "Alkebu-Lan (Land of the Blacks)," that gives his nephew Mtume a chance to work out on percussion. Similarly, "Angel Man" is listed in the liner notes as a tribute to Yusef Lateef, another musical missionary.

References to Heath often refer to his connection to John Coltrane, as the two frequently crossed paths in Philadelphia. In fact, Coltrane played in Heath's band in the late '40s. But as Coltrane and many others pointed out over the years, Heath didn't operate in anyone's shadow. He issued a series of superb albums on Riverside and with his brothers, the late Percy and Al (who plays drums on this album), remained a tireless voice in jazz. This album puts his really great, passionate playing on full display with superb support from Al, the excellent Kenny Barron and bass mainstay Bob Cranshaw.

Bonus! This reissue clocks in at 76 minutes with the inclusion "Love and Understanding," another very good effort, "Love and Understanding," from 1973. The support remains impeccable: underrated pianist Stanley Cowell, trombonist Curtis Fuller, always great Billy Higgins on drums and Bernard Fennell, who mixes in cello, and Heath's playing nails it again.

The liner notes mention that "The Gap Sealer" ended an eight-year recording drought for Heath. How that ever happened is for others to figure out. But take my recommendation and end any listening drought you might have by picked up "The Gap Sealer." You'll find that it is indeed a sound for sore ears.
