Jazz / Hard Bop / Jazz Piano Trio
Includes two never-before-released bonus tracks. DSD remastered. Pianist Jack Wilson (1936-2007) was born in Chicago and moved Fort Wayne, Indiana at age seven. He became proficient with piano early, joining the local musicians union by his 15th birthday and playing a two-week stint as a substitute pianist in James Moody's band. He worked with Dinah Washington, Gene Ammons, Sonny Stitt, Eddie Harris before moving to Los Angeles.
The first seven stereo tracks on this CD was recorded live at The Pied Piper in Los Angeles, in 1967, with Ike Isaacs on bass and Jimmie Smith on drums. Indeed, they had been released in 1967 by RGD as Ike Isaacs Trio at Freddie Jett's Pied Piper. (The reason why they credited the bassist as the leader is unknown.) In addition, this reissue CD includes two mono tracks (Tracks 8 and 9) recorded in a Hollywood studio a year earlier.
On these cuts, Wilson swings soulfully with crisp touch, and his dynamic playing is enhanced nicely by the tight rhythm section. A wonderful piano trio CD, unearthed and made available again by the good people at SSJ Records!
Recorded live at The Pied Piper, Los Angeles in June 1967 (1-7) and at Gold Star Studios, Hollywood in May 1966 (8-9). DSD remastered in 2011. Japanese, paper sleeve (mini LP) limited edition.
